Battle Task: Provide Religious Support During Mass Casualty Situations - 161-211- 6111

Conditions: Given a tactical or non-tactical environment, a mass casualty situation with wounded or dying soldiers in your area of operation/responsibility, access to religious items necessary to provide pastoral care, rites, sacraments, or ordinances, a chaplain assistant and qualified medical personnel.

Standards: Provide religious support to as many wounded or dying individuals as the situation and time allow. This includes identifying the individuals most in need of religious support, determining religious needs and preferences, prioritizing the categories of pastoral care to include: expectant, immediate, delayed, and minimal.

Performance Measures Results 1. Identify SOP and guidance for position of UMT P F 2. Determine the task of the chaplain assistant. P F 3. Identify the individuals most in need of religious support. P F 4. Proceed to the casualty collection point and identify those individuals P F categorized by medical triage as expectant, immediate, delayed, minimal. 5. Determine the individual’s religious preference. P F 6. Perform the religious support needs that are appropriate ie: Ministry of P F presence, Conversational assurance or comfort, Pastoral prayer and/or scripture reading, Rites, sacraments, or ordinances. 7. Document ministry performed on casualty card. P F 8. Provide ministry to the care-givers. P F

Battle Task: Coordinate Religious Support During Mass Casualty - 161-209-7091

Conditions: Given a tactical or non-tactical environment, a mass casualty situation with wounded and/or dying soldiers, availability of Unit Ministry Teams, installation SOP, hospital SOP and necessary religious items needed to perform or provide pastoral care in the form of prayers, comfort, rites, sacraments, or/and ordinances.

Standards: Coordinate pastoral care to wounded and/or dying individuals and religious support to caregivers and family members in accordance with the UMTs plan of support, and FM16-1, Religious Support, (May 1995), para. 1-7, 1-8.

Performance Measures Results 1. Develop religious support strategies with available UMTs. P F 2. UMTs triage, determine, and provide the level of pastoral care needed; i.e., P F expectant (to include last rites), immediate, delayed, and minimal . 3. UMTs provide pastoral care for the survivors and care-givers; i.e., prayers, P F counseling, scripture reading and/or ministry of presence. 4. Provide follow-up ministry to the casualties and/or family members of the P F deceased and to the care-givers.
