Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS)@One-North (Singapore, Jan 2016)

Oxford has been invited to nominate up to five (5) ‘bright young scientists’ (DPhil students or postdocs) working in ‘physics, chemistry, medicine, engineering, computer science and mathematics, and related disciplines’ to attend the 4th Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS)@One-North to be held in Singapore in January 2016.2 The organisers stipulate that participants must be no older than age 35 as at January 2016. Those selected to attend are also encouraged to participate in the Singapore Challenge, which this year is on the topic of ‘Sustainable and Liveable Cities’.

If you wish to be considered for selection as one of the Oxford nominees, please complete and email the Expression of Interest (EOI) Form and required attachments by 12 noon, Tuesday 1 Sep 2015 to the MPLS Divisional Office ([email protected]). The email subject line should be ‘GYSS Nomination - [insert family name].’ EOIs will be considered by a small panel of academics drawn from the MPLS and Medical Sciences Divisions.

Demonstration of strong passion and interest in research

Demonstrated strong academic achievement in area of research, assessed within the top 5-10 percent of cohort

Examples of where and how you have successfully communicated about your research with other researchers and/or the general public (e.g. in conferences, symposia, science or arts festivals, school visits, in the press, web sites or social media, etc.)

Explain how attendance at the Summit would contribute to your personal or academic career development.

Please note that one or more of the items below may be provided to the NRF/GYSS Selection Committee.

1. Letter of Recommendation Max. 2-page letter of support from your supervisor commenting explicitly on the nomination against each of the selection criteria, viz. 1. Demonstrate strong passion and interest in research 2. Demonstrate strong academic achievement in area of research, assessed within the top 5-10% of cohort 3. Possess good English skills for active discussion and engagement with peers and speakers 4. Demonstrate interest and ability in communicating research to other researchers and/or the general public (e.g. in conferences, symposia, science or arts festivals, school visits, in the press, web sites or social media, etc.)

2. Letter of Support A brief letter of support from the Head of Department This must include confirmation that your department will meet the travel costs to and from Singapore (the National Research Foundation in Singapore will cover the local costs).3

3. Short CV Your Curriculum Vitae (CV) (max. 1 A4 page)

3 Singapore will provide the hospitality for the participants in Singapore, which will include accommodation, summit conference costs, social activities, meals and local transportation between accommodation, conference sites and social activities.
