NCTSN Schools Work Group Teleconference

Subcommittee #2 NCTSN Schools Work Group Teleconference Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date: April 8, 2018 Meeting Time: 10:30 am Pacific, 1:30 pm Eastern

I. Introductions

II. Meeting Purpose: Follow up on All Network Meeting

III. Summary from ANM

Idea of Master Curriculum - Criteria for School-Based Program

To consider:  Do we want to develop our own curriculum?  What will the curriculum address?

Feedback: Sounds like a worthwhile project, however, large in magnitude; raising awareness of adults making referrals is only one stop along the continuum.

IV. Where do we start?

Questions:  Would we consider using a format like Better Todays. Better Tomorrows. For Children’s Mental Health? Adding specific criteria, utilizing Developmental school counseling model?  What outcome do we expect?  What are education, training and awareness issues around trauma?  What do we want school staff to know about working with traumatized children?  What materials and resources do we need to make available to school staff?  How do we emphasize the importance of trauma among other issues such as ADHD?  What message should we get out to teachers, administrators, school psychologists?

Two parts: 1. Identifying symptoms 2. Helping school professionals become agents for change Marleen Wong – co-author of book on trauma – possible reference for this project.

Concern: People don’t know what trauma looks like. Children are often misdiagnosed / medicated because trauma is not taken into account.

Ideas:  Use of the Network to test projects locally  Screening teachers  Giving teachers skills

Incorporation of Decision Making:  Repertoire of skills/understanding to respond to various stimuli in the classroom  Inclusion of decision making in the trauma model (make it make sense to educators & help them be better educators  Integrate it into teacher language  Use for teacher prep – staff development

Resource to Cover:  all different age groups  urban, rural areas, Indian reservations (different modules) *Start with something broad and adapt it to different populations

Feedback: In order to raise awareness we need to be more specific. Do we address Teachers? Or School administrators? *Pick target population in order to make it easier to disseminate information

V. What could be short-term, immediate product?

Handbook, Booklet, Pamphlet, or Video for Educators: What do teachers need to know about child trauma?

Sub-Headings:  Developmental considerations – symptom manifestation  Different types of trauma children are exposed to  Build on current resources – General info sheet (media) How trauma can interfere with learning / ability to take in more information; How it affects attendance and grades  Provide case examples – what these things look like and how people choose to deal with them

Feedback: Starting with educators makes sense. Get educators involved in the process to help assess the need.

Concern: Is this just raising awareness, but not helping them do anything? *There has to be a starting point: We can provide information on what to do when symptoms are recognized. (Such as refer to school psychologist or other mental health worker).

Thoughts & Ideas  What are some of the things that we know about trauma?  How do you address different types of trauma? What information do we give out?  Trauma will vary depending on the school  Impart knowledge that information can be obtained on different types of trauma (i.e. website, etc.)  Information on Teacher self-care

Potential Study: Teachers who are bullies; Teachers with PTSD

Focus Groups: Begin developing questions to figure out what is needed (What medium to use?)

Identified Trauma Issues:  Gangs  Suicide  Physical Assaults  Injuries/Death

VI. Next Steps
