Legislative Updates Ms. Carrie Schonlaw reported that Aging Services has fared well during the latest round of budget cuts. Nationally, the National Caregiver Program cut was about $12,000. There will be cuts to this program on the State level, about $14,000, as adjustments have been made for federal cuts in previous years. There may be reallocation of funds during the next fiscal year based on census information. These cuts may impact the number of caregivers receiving services in our area. The FY 2012 budget is based on the FY 2011 federal budget. One program, Senior Employment (Easter Seals) has been cut dramatically.

Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementia State Plan Task Force During the last legislative session, a new task force was approved to study the impact of Alzheimer’s Disease and other Related Dementia in the State of Utah. According to statistics, Utah will have the largest population of citizens with these diseases in the nation. Factors contributing to this statistic include living longer, more awareness, etc. The Governor has appointed committee members to meet from now to October to help determine resources, how to meet growing needs, respite options, family caregiving, help establish state policies, etc. and report the findings to the legislature in November. Ms. Carrie Schonlaw has been appointed to this Task Force from our region.
