Language and Literacy in the New Standards: Realizing Opportunities for English Learners Across the Curriculum (Audience: All) Keynote Speaker: Dr. George Bunch This talk provides an introduction to the language and literacy challenges associated with the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics and the Next Generation Science Standards—and how opportunities associated with those challenges can be realized for English Learners across the curriculum. Examples will be provided of how teachers can foster ELs’ language and literacy development in and through the curricular content, understandings, and practices at the heart of the new standards.

2 Unlocking the Knowledge in Complex Texts: Vocabulary and Reading Volume Presenter: Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert Words represent concepts, concepts are the basis of knowledge, and knowledge is presented in complex texts. To fully participate with complex texts, students need to develop a vibrant and generative vocabulary. They also need to read widely and deeply in texts that vary in complexity and topic. Dr. Hiebert will describe how vocabulary learning can be bolstered and how the amount that students read—and learn—can be increased in classrooms. Strategies that Connect English Learners with the CCSS Presenter: Joy Keifer Learn how the new ELD Standards fit in with the Common Core. Practice strategies that you can use in your classrooms. Joy Keifer coordinates and teaches ELD at a high school. She has worked in the field of ELD for many years in a variety of roles including coach, coordinator, and elementary and high school teacher. Proactive Strategies to Engage ALL Students in Effective Classroom Discussion (Audience: K-12) Presenter: Theresa Quinby, NUSD Teacher Leader and "Equity and Access" Coach Common Core standards expect students to engage in effective collaborative discussions in the classroom, but this expectation will not happen overnight. Successful discussion involving ALL students requires explicit teacher-led instruction and guidance to better ensure that students have a voice in the classroom community. This workshop will provide participants with a model lesson that integrates proactive strategies and structures that will encourage students to successfully engage in collaborative discussion and practice using academic vocabulary. Participants will see how hands-on science investigations can easily work with the Common Core Standards and the new Next Generation Science Standards. 3 How Do We Find the Time to Teach It All? Integration of Science, Language Arts and History Using the Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) Curriculum (Audience K-12) Presenter: Amity Sandage, CREEC Network Coordinator This session will provide an overview and hands-on demonstration of how the EEI Curriculum uses the California environment as the context for integrating multiple subjects. In-depth K-12 units provide extensive background information for teachers, include stunning visual aids, make subject matter relevant for students, and address up-to-date environmental science and social-science issues for our state. Mathematics Workshops for Implementing CCSS (Audience: Elementary) What processes and proficiencies do the new CCSS-M standards ask us to develop in our students, and how can we do so? What kind of Professional Development do we want around the Common Core State Standards for mathematics (CCSS-M)? Teacher-leaders from MBAMP will be presenting answers to these questions as well as ways to begin to implement the standards this year in our classrooms.
