Dragonboat Report September 2016 Submitted by Joyce May

. . . . and a good time was had by all. We’re in the final week of the main paddling season. FLCC teams are wrapping up practices and celebrating a season of successful regattas.

As the main paddling season winds up, winter paddling begins with an increased number of teams scheduled to be on the water in both standard and 10 person boats.

We have the use of the two Swifts over the winter. When the colder weather sets in the boats will need to be hauled out and tarped when not in use. A roller system for the end of the south finger is being built to make haul-out easier.

The Swifts will need to be kept free of internal water to protect against damage.

It is likely we will have a storage space where we can have ongoing maintenance done over the winter. It particular we will have fiberglass word done on the boats.

Talk of a FLCC Dragonboat regatta has moved closer to reality. The division has the skills, learned at River Run, Cranberry Festival and Senior Games, to execute a successful regatta. A committee is being formed to look at the logistics.

5 FLCC Executive Meeting

The steers assessment process continues and we are close to seeing all of the primary or regular steers for teams having successfully been assessed or having assessments scheduled.

Navigation regulations require ‘lights’ after sunset and before sunrise. The lights for Human-Powered Boats can be: Option 1 -An electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light (a watertight flashlight is acceptable) ready to use far enough in advance to prevent a collision. Option 2 - Same lights as listed for sail boats, according to length. In our case it would be sidelights; and sternlight. Teams were informed of the requirements but no all have complied. The same situation will occur in April and an effort to bring all teams to compliance will be made.

The DB first-aid kits appear to be missing as of Sunday morning. Need to look into the situation.

Sprint Report August 2016 Submitted by Grant Rawstron

The end of August was the Canadian Nationals in Halifax. Our six athletes performed very well and some came home with medals – Elliot Hoyt ended with a creditable 10th placing in the Junior Mens K1000. Our women teamed up to win the clubs first medal in high kneel Canoeing, and two medals in K2 and K4 races. With a lot of new young paddlers in the club we were able to take a bigger team to the Pacific Cup and they had great introduction to a big local regatta with over 200 athletes from 17 clubs which included clubs from Yukon, Alberta, Washington and outlying areas in BC. Also last Saturday Emily hosted a fun regatta for all the sprint families to take part followed by a potluck and awards ceremony to celebrate individuals achievements this season. This was a great opportunity for the families to socialize and have some fun around the sport. This is planning time for next season so already meetings have taken place to review the successes of this last season. With the possibility of additional programs being added to next years schedule we recognize the need for more staff so that we can continue to grow.

OC Report Presented by Gralin Doubleday September 25, 2016 Our annual huli drill is nearly complete with just a few remaining to complete. There will be a final push to get these done before month’s end, many thanks to those helping out to supervise the groups & teams in completing their drills. Rough estimates indicate approximately 180 members will have completed their huli drill this year. A couple serious issues were discovered while a particular crew attempted to complete their huli drill. One of the Calmars was discovered to be taking on water in the bow and stern due to structural issues and one of the Calmar amas was found to be leaking and taking on water, this made trying to right the canoe after huli’ing very difficult and impossible for some. The suspect hull and ama have been taken off the water for repairs. The Bradley tail section has been repaired and the canoe has been returned to service.

7 FLCC Executive Meeting

The current status of our three OC1s is as follows, two are under repair and not currently in use while the third is working well and in full service. Final steps are underway to complete the fall/winter OC6 schedule, this will be complete before October 1st. As always, information on any CORA items, your annual membership renewal and race schedule & results can be found by visiting https://www.canadianoutrigger.com
