Define “poetry” -

Keys to Reading and Understanding Poetry: 1. Read poems aloud, listening to sounds. 2. Read in complete sentences, following punctuation. 3. Think about the diction (denotation and connotation). 4. Identify any figurative language and what it reveals about the subject. 5. If divided into stanzas, identify the main idea in each. 6. Identify imagery, your reaction to it, and what the imagery may show about the poem. 7. Identify any sound devices and how they contribute to the poem’s mood or ideas. 8. Consider how the poem’s rhythm may reinforce ideas or how changes in rhythm relate to shifts or surprises in the poem.
