LEARNING TO JUMP

 Practice climbing activities up and down the stairs, on and off a step or block, on the bottom rungs of a climbing frame, even under a blanket on the floor or through a hula hoop.

 Jump off bottom step – hold your child's hand.

 Jump forwards using a two-footed landing and takeoff. Lay a rope or garden hose on the ground. Set up a jumping course. Practice jumping like a frog.

 Draw hopscotch squares – have your child jump forward with two feet.

 Practice jumping over a string on the floor and then raise it an inch at a time.

 Practice galloping and skipping, hopping like a bunny, various animal walks.

 Stride Jumps: Jump with legs apart and then together. Repeat 5 times.

 Jumping Jacks: Have your child stand with his feet together, arms at his side. Jump raising his arms above his head and spreading his feet apart and then jump back to the starting position. To begin with it may be easier for your child to do only the arms or the legs, before combining the two.

 Scissor Jumps: Assist your child to stand with their right foot and arm back and their left foot and arm forward. Tell your child to jump and reverse the position of the arms and legs. To begin with it may be easier for your child to move only the arms or legs. Putting streamers in your child's hands can make it more fun.
