Ellison • Harvard Forest • USA • [email protected] Dozens of scientific papers about carnivorous plant research are published each year on diverse topics ranging from new species descriptions, through phylogenetic approaches in taxonomy and systematics, to ecology and evolution of botanical carnivory, biomechanics and physiology of traps, among many others. By the time a paper is published, however, it is already “old news” because the salient results often are presented months or even years earlier at scientific conferences. Such meetings are the perfect venues to discuss ongoing research and “hot” topics and present them to colleagues from around the world. The first and last authors of this report were in the lucky situation to organize symposia about carnivorous plant biology during two major conferences: Simon Poppinga chaired a one-day ses- sion—“Carnivorous plants - Physiology, ecology, and evolution”—on July 6, 2017, as part of the Annual Main Meeting of the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) in Gothenburg, Sweden. -

Also, the paper provides information about the hayfields floral richness, a great scientific value for Romania and Europe. The study of the flora was carried out in several stages: 2005-2008, 2013, 2017-2018. In the studied area, 397 taxa were identified, distributed in 82 families with therapeutic potential, represented by 164 medical taxa, 37 of them being in the European Pharmacopoeia 8.5. The study reveals that most plants contain: volatile oils (13.41%), tannins (12.19%), flavonoids (9.75%), mucilages (8.53%) etc. This plants can be used in the treatment of various human disorders: disorders of the digestive system, respiratory system, skin disorders, muscular and skeletal systems, genitourinary system, in gynaecological disorders, cardiovascular, and central nervous sistem disorders. In the study plants protected by law at European and national level were identified: Echium maculatum, Cephalaria radiata, Crambe tataria, Narcissus poeticus ssp. radiiflorus, Salvia nutans, Iris aphylla, Orchis morio, Orchis tridentata, Adonis vernalis, Dictamnus albus, Hammarbya paludosa etc. Keywords: Fărăgău, medicinal plants, human disease, Mureş County 1. -

REVIEW ARTICLE A Review on Pharmacological Approach of the Therapeutic Property of Madhuca longifolia (J.Koenig ex L.) J. f. Macbr. Flower Bibha Mishra A*, Usha T Post graduate and Research Department of Foods and Nutrition, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai-600 008, India. *Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT Liver plays an important role in maintaining the metabolic function and excretion of toxins from the body. An injury or liver dysfunction caused by consumption of toxic chemicals, excessive alcohol and microbes result in a challenging condition called hepatotoxicity. Madhuca longifolia belonging to Sapotaceae family is found to possess pharmacological properties in the treatment of various diseases. The present review aims at compiling the hepatoprotective effect of Mahua flower based on various experimental studies. Methanolic extract of Mahua flower exhibited hepatoprotective property when administered at different dosages in rat was found to lower the levels of SGPT, SGOT, ALP and total bilirubin simultaneously increasing serum total proteins and albumin. The ethanolic extract also showed hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats when administered in dosage of 500 and 750 mg/kg body weight by stimulating the healing and regeneration of hepatocytes. Hepatoprotective activity might be due to the effect of extractsagainst the cellular leakage and loss of function of the cell membrane in hepatocytes. The protective effect might be due to the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and phenolics. Future prospects include purification and characterization of phyto-compounds present in the Madhucalongifolia flower. Further studies on mechanism of action will lead to discovery of novel therapeutic agents for the treatment hepatic diseases. -

This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. The tree is also of great commercial importance. The flower of the mahua tree is used by the people to make liquor. The liquor produced is famous for consumption among local people. It has been observed that various regions of the country has its own variety of liquor. for eg- goa is famous for its variety ‘feni’. Similarly in order to market the rural product of Chhattisgarh i.e ‘Mahua’ the government needs to promote the product by creating a Brand. This will help in its commercialization and also will create employment for rural people. Although the government of India and various states have put a ban on liquor looking it as a social evil,which is deteriorating the culture of society. But as far as the economic view is concerned the liquor market contributes to a large share of the revenue though selling mahua is ban but it is sold through unorganized channel, So for development of rural economy the government should take some measures to promote this heritage liquor of the state. McLean2 Introduction Uses: tree lawn 3–4 feet wide; tree lawn 4–6 feet wide; tree lawn > 6 ft wide; sidewalk cutout (tree pit); parking lot Lignum vitae is an extremely slow-growing broadleaf island < 100 sq ft; parking lot island 100–200 sq ft; parking evergreen which ultimately reaches 30 feet in height and lot island > 200 sq ft; container or planter; specimen; deck casts light shade, but few people have seen plants of this or patio; Bonsai; highway median size because it is not grown in the trade. Most are seen 8 to 12 feet tall with a beautiful array of multiple trunks and a rounded canopy much like that of a mature crape-myrtle. The one to two-inch-long, leathery, dark green leaves are joined at many times throughout the year by the production of large clusters of bluish purple flowers, the old flowers fading to a light silvery-blue and creating a shimmering haze over the rounded canopy. These flowers are followed by small, heart-shaped, yellow orange berries, appearing on the tree at the same time as the bluish purple flowers and creating a lovely sight. Is Guaiacum sanctum Effective Against Arthritis? An Ethnobotany Case by Eric Ribbens, Barbra Burdett, and Angela Green Department of Biological Science Western Illinois University Part I—Anecdotal Evidence Dr. Beth Tonoany is a tropical population ecologist who has been studying an unusual tree, Guaiacum sanctum, which once grew throughout the dry tropical forests of Central America as well as on some of the Caribbean islands. Guaiacum sanctum produces a wood called lignum vitae, and is known in Costa Rica and other Spanish-speaking countries as guayacan reál. The wood is extremely heavy because it contains extensive deposits of resin (Howes, 1949) and it will sink if placed in water (Wilson and Eisner, 1968). During World War I and II it was extensively harvested for use in the ship-building industry because the wood, which does not split easily, is self- lubricating due to its high resin content. The wood is very durable, and was in high demand for constructing bearing sleeves to support ship propellor Figure 1: Seeds of shafts (Scurlock, 1987). It has also been used for making railroad ties Guaiacum sanctum (Woods, 1951). Dr. Tonoany has been studying one of the last remaining populations of lignum vitae in the Palo Verde Nature Preserve in northwestern Costa Rica. Probably fewer than 100 trees remain in Costa Rica, most in the Palo Verde Nature Preserve. Her research has included tracking seedlings and saplings, locating and measuring adult trees, and interviewing some of the local Ticos to learn about the tree’s past history in Costa Rica. The tree, while rare now due to the dramatic conversion of tropical deciduous forest in Costa Rica into pasturelands and to selective logging of the tree for its valuable wood, was once more common, and many of the older Ticos remember that the saplings were used to make cattle switches because of the strong flexible wood in the saplings. -

A B S T R A C T This study documents the traditional uses of Cheura or Chyur (Diploknema butyracea) by a tribal group (Van-Raji) in Eastern Uttarakhand part of western Himalayan region. Cheura is one of the eco- nomically important but lesser known and underutilized multipurpose tree of Himalaya. It has a great spiritual and cultural importance along with livelihood association along the Himalayan communities especially the Van-Rajis, which are among the most ancient primitive vulnerable tribes (PVTs) of In- dia with a population of around 700 in Uttarakhand. Field surveys were conducted during 2015–2017 to collect data on the availability and uses of various parts of this tree by the tribals in their 9 hamlets in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. -
