Subject: Powered Industrial Trucks & Aerial Work Platforms

Topic: Checklists

Question: What is the required length of time to retain records of fork lift checklists? Is there a reference for other documents such as aerial lifts or other types of daily safety checklists?

Answer: Employers are required to train operators of forklifts and aerial work platforms. Instruction shall include how to make daily checks or inspections. At the start of each shift, the operator of a powered industrial truck or the operator of an aerial work platform or a qualified employee shall perform daily checks of the equipment as required by the employer. The standards listed below identify no specific length of time to retain checklist records. I recommend employers retain the previous year and current year checklists.

Applicable Construction Safety Standard/Rule: Part 12. Scaffolds and Scaffold Platforms, Part 13. Mobile Equipment, and Part 32. Aerial Work Platform.

Applicable General Industry Safety Standard/Rule: Part 21. Powered Industrial Trucks and Part 58. Aerial Work Platforms.

Applicable Occupational Health Standard/Rule: N/A
