PS 347 American Sign Language and English Lower School 4th grade Library Media Center Skills 2010-11 Unit 5: What do you know about your animal or planet? Approx dates: April - May 2011 Informational text study: taking notes and sharing your knowledge in ASL Reading: RI.4.9/5.9. Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgably. Speaking/Listening: SL.4.4/5.4. Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. SL.4.5/5.5. Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. ASL: Signing and viewing for meaning: Students create background knowledge of a subject using primary language in order to booster comprehension. Rationale: Why is it important to learn these things? Note taking that captures the reading of informational text and the reflecting on it and making meaning of it is a complex reading experience for a child. In this unit, the note taking is done in what is the primary language of most of the children. I want to see if that improves their comprehension and their perception of comprehension. They will learn about one animal or one planet (or star) as part of their science curriculum and share their knowledge with a friend using the flip cameras. They loved watching themselves on the video camera. I will amend my survey because I found that writing what they remembered wasn’t important and to have to articulate it in English wasn’t my goal.
Mainly I wanted to know if they understand more due to the added step of signing what they learned to a friend. Did including the primary language and social interaction booster learning?
