SKIPPER 12 OF MID-CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL IN NEWBERRY 13 COUNTY UPON BEING NAMED THE EARTH SCIENCE 14 TEACHER OF THE YEAR BY THE MINING ASSOCIATION 15 OF SOUTH CAROLINA, THE SOUTH CAROLINA EARTH 16 SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, THE SOUTH 17 CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND THE 18 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA CENTER FOR 19 SCIENCE EDUCATION, AND TO EXTEND SINCERE 20 APPRECIATION FOR HER OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP 21 AND MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO PUBLIC EDUCATION IN 22 SOUTH CAROLINA. 23 24 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to 25 honor Karin Barton Skipper of Mid-Carolina High School, in 26 Newberry County, for being named Earth Science Teacher of the 27 Year by the Mining Association of South Carolina as well as by 28 three other prominent organizations; and 29 30 Whereas, Karin B. Skipper holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in 31 Geology from Queens College in New York City; and 32 33 Whereas, through her guidance, leadership, and vision, Karin B. 34 Skipper designed the basic structure of her earth science course to 35 promote reading of textbooks outside the classroom, thereby 36 reserving class time for hands-on activities; and 37 38 Whereas, to embrace ongoing scientific investigations, Karin B. 39 Skipper incorporates the Jason Project, sponsored by the Jason 40 Foundation for Education, into the earth science curriculum; and 41

1 [4856] 1 1 Whereas, the Jason Project is aligned with the South Carolina State 2 Education Standards, and this year allowed students an opportunity 3 to explore via the Internet, with professional scientists in the field, 4 the geology, geography, and climate of the North Pole and the 5 South Pole; and 6 7 Whereas, Karin B. Skipper was also chosen as Earth Science 8 Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Earth Science Teachers 9 Association, the South Carolina Department of Education, and the 10 University of South Carolina Center for Science Education, as well 11 as by the Mining Association of South Carolina; and 12 13 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to 14 have this opportunity to recognize Karin B. Skipper for her 15 outstanding accomplishments which have contributed 16 immeasurably to the education of children and to the future of 17 South Carolina. Now, therefore, 18 19 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 20 concurring: 21 22 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 23 Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Karin B. 24 Skipper of Mid-Carolina High School in Newberry County upon 25 being named the Earth Science Teacher of the Year by the Mining 26 Association of South Carolina, the South Carolina Earth Science 27 Teachers Association, the South Carolina Department of 28 Education, and the University of South Carolina Center for 29 Science Education, and extend sincere appreciation for her 30 outstanding leadership and many contributions to public education 31 in South Carolina. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 34 Karin B. Skipper of Mid-Carolina High School. 35 ----XX----
