Lucky continues to play in the mud after being warned by his friends. He gets stuck in the mud. He cannot get unstuck. His friends can’t pull him out. He is truly stuck until the arrival of a special neighbor gives him the determination to pull himself out of the mud. --- Conversation Questions---

(1) Describe what happened to Lucky Duck. (Answer) Lucky got stuck. His friends couldn’t pull him out and more trouble was on its way. Lucky had to see for himself what his hard work was worth. (Follow Up) Should you rely on luck to get good grades?

(2) Imagine how Lucky felt when he found himself stuck in the puddle? (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Do you think he became upset when none of his friends could pull him out?

(3) Imagine how Lucky began to feel when all his friends left him with Stinky on the way? (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) How did Lucky feel when he pulled himself out of the puddle?

(4) Remember a time when you had to use hard work to get a job done. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Are you sometimes lazy and try to see if you can get lucky on tests?

(5) Substitute another word for grubby. (Answer) Dirty, messy, filthy or untidy. (Follow Up) Do you often end up grubby after playing outside all day?

1. Draw each of Lucky’s friends. Which do you think tried most to help him? Describe what he did to help Lucky.

2. Draw Lucky. Why was he considered a lucky duck?

3. Write a rhyming poem about Lucky Duck.

4. List as many rhyming word pairs from the story as you can find.

Introductions

1. Bring in a four leaf clover or a picture of one. Discuss what it means to say someone is lucky. Our story today is about a duck that needed hard work not luck to get itself unstuck.

2. Write the word luck down. Have the students name all the words they can think of that rhyme with luck. Our story today has a lot of rhyming words in it. Notice them as we read about a duck others say has a lot of luck.

3. Bring in a stuffed duck. Ask the students if they have ever heard someone called a lucky duck. What does it mean when someone is called a lucky duck? Our story is about a character who finds he needs to rely on hard work and not the luck to get the job done.
