MTT/ED/LEO and CS/SP Chapters of IEEE NJ COAST SECTION Presents Practical Applications of Fiber Optic Sensors By Dr. Hong-Liang Cui Department of Physics and Engineering Physics Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, New Jersey 07030
ABSTRACT: Fiber optic sensors have long been regarded as “a technology solution looking for problems to solve”. In this talk, I will give an overview of our recent effort in finding application partners and areas of fiber optic sensor technology in China. These include structural health monitoring of civil structures such as bridges and tunnels, methane gas detection in underground coal mines, prospecting for oil/gas using fiber optic geophones, and fiber optic weigh-in-motion sensors for highway monitoring and protection.
BIOGRAPHY: Hong-Liang Cui is a Professor of Physics at Stevens Institute of Technology, where he directs the Applied Electronics Laboratory. He received his undergraduate education in applied physics with a concentration in laser optics from the Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics in Changchun, China, graduating first in his class with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1982. In 1981 he came to the United States for graduate study as one of the first group of Chinese physics students in the CUSPEA program, obtaining the Ph.D. degree in theoretical condensed matter physics in 1987, from Stevens Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty since. His research efforts have been concentrated in the areas of solid-state electronics/nanoelectronics, optical communications and sensing, electromagnetic wave propagation and interaction with matters such as bio-agents, and high-performance computing approach to modeling of physical devices and phenomena. His work has been funded by NSF, ARO, ONR, and DARPA. He has published more than 160 research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, holds 5 US patents, and guided 25 Ph.D. dissertations to completion. He has membership in the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Optical Society of America, and Sigma Xi.
