The Hampshire County Tax Lien Sale is held annually for one day between October 14 and November 23. The exact date of the sale will be scheduled in late September. A complete list of the delinquent taxes is published in the HAMPSHIRE REVIEW approximately one month prior to the sale and the list will run for three consecutive weeks. The Hampshire Review is published weekly on Wednesdays. This information is also available in the legal section on the newspaper’s website - www.hampshirereview.com. We do not notify the public by mail of the sale, nor do we accept bids through the mail or over the telephone. If you are interested in seeing the general location of a parcel, you can view this on the Hampshire County Assessor’s website at www.co.hampshire.wv.us .
All purchasers must be present or represented by a third party the day of the tax lien sale. Copies of the list of properties for tax lien sale will be handed out before the tax lien sale starts. Taxpayers can pay their delinquent taxes up until the time our office issues the certificate of sale. Any changes made during the sale will be announced as soon as we receive the information. The bidding process starts at the delinquent tax amount and goes to the highest bidder. The bid amount plus the current year taxes are paid at the end of the sale. We do not collect any money until after all of the paper work has been processed, at least one hour after the end of the sale. Payment can be made with U.S. currency, U.S. cashier’s checks, or credit card, including Discover, MasterCard, and Visa (convenience fees applied). Personal checks will be accepted with a letter of approval from your bank. You will be given a certificate of sale at that time. The original land owner has approximately 18 months to redeem their property. During this time, interest will accrue at the rate of 1 percent on the tax amount paid, but not on the surplus paid at the sale.
Enclosed is a list of the codes and instructions that need to be followed to ensure that your investment is not jeopardized.
