A RESOLUTION Adjourning the House of Representatives in Loving Memory and Honor of Richard

A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Richard H. Lewis. With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to our friend and colleague, Richard H. Lewis. WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis, a native of Princeton, Kentucky, was born on December 3, 1937, and traversed these earthly bounds on March 11, 1997; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis was the adored son of Nola Hayes Lewis and Fred T. Lewis, who preceded him in death; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis was the devoted husband of Martha Cunningham Lewis; the loving father of three daughters, Beth Lewis Maze, Cynthia Jones, and Katherine Helms; and proud grandfather of four grandsons; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis served his country with distinction as a captain in the United States Army; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis earned his bachelor of science degree from Murray State University in 1960 where he was the recipient of the Golden Horseshoe Award; and he earned his J.D. degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1965 where he was the recipient of the Roy M. Moreland Service Award; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis served his constituents with pride during two sets of terms in the Kentucky General Assembly from 1970-1975 and 1989-1994, representing the sixth legislative district of Caldwell, Lyon and Marshall counties; and WHEREAS, to mention only a few of his many leadership accomplishments, Richard H. Lewis was Chief Executive Officer to Governor Julian Carroll from 1975- 1976; he was a member of the Workers' Compensation Board from 1976-1978; he was chairman of the Kentucky Alcohol Beverage Board from 1980-1982; in 1980, Governor John Y. Brown, Jr., appointed him chairman of the Workers' Compensation Revision Task Force; in 1982, he was special commissioner to the Marshall Circuit Court; and in

1995, he was appointed by Governor Brereton Jones to the Murray State University Board of Regents; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis was named by the House of Representatives in 1970 as the Outstanding Freshman Representative; he was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce; and he was named Marshall County Citizen of the Year in 1977; and WHEREAS, in a life dedicated to public service, Richard H. Lewis set an unparalleled example of integrity and commitment ; and WHEREAS, Richard H. Lewis was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Benton, Kentucky, where he served as deacon and chairman of the Pulpit Committee; and WHEREAS, all who knew and admired Richard H. Lewis will grieve over their loss, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its deepest sense of sorrow upon the passing of Richard H. Lewis, and extends to his family its most heartfelt sympathy and profound gratitude for his life and work. Section 2. The passion, dedication, intelligence and social consciousness Richard

H. Lewis brought to this Commonwealth will never be forgotten, and his influence will continue. Section 3. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Richard H. Lewis. Section 4. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Martha Cunningham Lewis, 117 Greenwood Road, Benton, Kentucky 42025.
