Name of Activity: Tobogganing
Target Audience: Junior Grades (4 to 6)
Description (Brief): Junior Grades walk to a nearby park to toboggan - one class/grade goes at a time - students bring their own sleds from home (school can also purchase ‘magic carpets’) - possibility of hot chocolate stand run by Intermediate Students ( to follow outdoor activity)
Materials and Cost: - toboggans (purchase set of 8 magic carpets) - hot chocolate - marshmallows - styrofoam cups - kleenex
Human Resources (i.e. students, parents, staff, etc.): -teachers to pick up hot chocolate, marshmallows -parents to help supervise the hill (and possibly the hot chocolate production) -Intermediate student volunteers to make hot chocolate -Intermediate students could ‘buddy’ with the younger students (one Intermediate per sled)
Community Partners: - grocery store and dollar store/Canadian Tire - Parks and Recreation
Space / Location: Nearby park, and staffroom or classroom to prepare hot chocolate.
Step-by-Step Process and Timeline: - Determine if this is a feasible activity for your school (is there a hill nearby, are there enough children with toboggans and a means of bringing them to school) - Prepare/distribute information/consent letter to parents - Determine if/how many toboggans need to be purchased - Contact grocery store/COSTCO for prices - Contact store in advance to confirm order and pick-up date - Review the buddy system in preparation for the walk - Review rules about safe tobogganing - Begin preparing hot chocolate approximately 15 minutes before students are to arrive back at school - Distribute the hot chocolate
Considerations / Helpful Hints: - be aware of safety concerns: check the hill in advance to make sure it is not too steep, icy etc. and make sure there is adequate supervision - remind students to dress warmly, bring an extra pair of socks - monitor weather forecast to select the most appropriate dates - be aware of food allergies
