SECRETARY GENERAL’S ANNUAL REPORT, 2009

Dear Masters & Fellows,

It is my proud privilege to present to you the report this year, the first time for me. As you all are well aware that Dr J C Chandna after 30 years of glorious service to the college handed over this office to me. It was a huge task to step into his shoes as he set very high standards of performance and fellowship. President Dr S.M. Taneja had also earmarked a few goals to be accomplished during his term. The first thing on the agenda was to have some meaningful continuing education programmes and with the support of our zonal regents & deputy zonal regents we could manage the following programmes :

CDE PROGRAMMES

1. June 24, 2009 : East Zone Deputy Regent Dr Rajeev Lall organized a lecture on “Cleft Lip & Palate” at Patna. 2. July 4, 2009 : A half day programme which included 3 lectures and a hands on demonstration from Indian and foreign faculty was jointly conducted with Academy of Oral Implantology at New Delhi. 3. July 24-26, 2009 : ICD was scientific partners to the Famdent at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Famdent was a three day trade show and close to 3000 dentists including ICD Fellows from all over the country participated in the event. Fellows Dr Mahesh Verma, Dr Rajiv K. Chugh, Dr Sushant Umre, Dr A. Kumarswamy, Dr Meera Verma, Dr Sandesh Mayekar, Dr Vimal Sikri, Dr Praveen Verma & Dr Brij Sabharwal were among the Guest Speakers. Awards for the best scientific presentations were given on the behalf of ICD. 4. August 30, 2009 : Dr Rajiv K. Chugh gave a lecture on “Retreatment Endodontics” for the dental surgeons of Faridabad. 5. September 27, 2009 : North Zone Deputy Regent Dr RP Gupta organized a full day lecture and a Hands on Programme on Restorative Dentistry at Chandigarh in collaboration with Dentsply India.

6. October 1-3, 2009 : ICD was scientific partners to the Famdent, Mumbai. Dr Rajiv K. Chugh was the Guest Speaker at the event. Awards for the best scientific presentations were given on the behalf of ICD. Dr A. Kumarswamy, the Zonal Regent West Zone was instrumental in organizing the programmes with the Famdent at New Delhi & Mumbai. 7. November 22, 2009 : Dr A. Kumarswamy, the Zonal Regent West Zone organized a scientific programme “ Let’s Talk Implants” at Mumbai. 8. February 6, 2010 : A CDE programme with IDA Delhi State Branch “Soft Tissue Aesthetics” was held at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi. The speakers were Dr Kanir Bhatia & Dr Kumarswamy from Mumbai.

International Councilman Meeting at Yokohama, Japan was attended by Secretary General Dr Rajiv K. Chugh and Councilman Dr Rajesh Chandna. International Councilman Meeting 2011 will be hosted by India, Sri Lanka & Nepal Section.

I will also like congratulate some of our fellows who won laurels for themselves and also made the section proud of them. Some of these are mentioned herewith :

ACHIEVEMENTS OF FELLOWS OF SECTION VI

1. Master Dr Anil Kohli, Councilman & Past President : ICD Councilman was re-elected as President, Dental Council of India.

2. Master Dr J C Chandna, Secretary General Emeritus, Master Dr RK Bali, Business Manager & Past President, Master Dr Pradip Jayna, Scientific Editor & Past President and Dr L K Gandhi, Past President : Lifetime achievement Awards were conferred upon them during the Famdent, New Delhi.

3. Dr. Ashish Kakar : Appointed as a Supervisor and Examiner at the Postgraduate Dental Education Unit, The Medical School, University of Warwick, Coventry, UK. The assignment includes supervising the Clinical and didactic activities and marking of papers for the M.Sc Implantology students enrolled in the Program. 4.Dr T. Samraj, Past President : Awarded as the “Dentist of the year 2009”, by the Indian Dentist Research and Review.

4. Dr A. Kumarswamy, Zonal Regent, West : Appointed as an Adjunct Prof. in the Dept. of Periodontics at the Univ. of North Carolina,USA.

5. Dr U.S. Krishna Nayak, Zonal Regent, South : Awarded ‘ MAN OF THE YEAR INDIA - 2009’ by the American Biographical Institute, Pennsylvania ,USA. Dr Nayak has been chosen for this award due to his significant lifetime contributions and accomplishments .

It has been our continuous endeavour to encourage education & research in the young budding professionals by giving them awards. ICD section 6 has instituted 3 new awards this year :

1. Best Post Graduate student in Prosthodontics amongst AIIMS, New Delhi / ITS Centre for Dental Studies & Research, Murad Nagar, Ghaziabad ( Donor – Dr. Hari Parkash). 2. Highest marks in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics in Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi ( Donor – Dr. S.M. Taneja). 3. Best Research work taken during post graduation in Endodontics – cash award ( Donor – Dr. Rajiv K. Chugh)

Dr Taneja also desired that the young professionals should be made more aware about ICD and its activities. With the help of our Zonal regents and deputy regents we could mobilize them and the result was that we had a higher number of applications for Fellowship this year and many more are waiting to join the college.

I am very happy that with the efforts of our Chief Editor Dr Kakar and his editorial team we have had an excellent journal. The journal has been well appreciated and there is a long list of articles waiting to be published.

I will like to thank all the Members of the Board and other Fellows of the section for their whole hearted support to make this a fruitful year.
