Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

They are outstanding not only for their size but also for the profusion, diversity and beauty of their mineral formations. Lechuguilla Cave stands out from the others, providing an underground laboratory where geological and biological processes can be studied in a pristine setting. © UNESCO SUMMARY 2020 Conservation Outlook Finalised on 02 Dec 2020 GOOD WITH SOME CONCERNS The cave resources of the site which form the basis of its Outstanding Universal Value are generally protected. However, concern remains about continued small but permanent damage from tourists. The site will be able to maintain current biodiversity only with heightened diligence, funding and direction, particularly to address the threat to air and water quality from adjacent development outside the park. More baseline studies of surface ecosystems are needed as a measure of probable impacts from climate change. There are no current threats to the geological values of the site for which it was inscribed. But increased oil and gas development reduces the quality of views from the park due to air pollution and light pollution at night, and poses a small risk of air pollution in some caves -

Contributions Toward a Lepidoptera (Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, Thyrididae, Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, & Noctuoidea) Biodiversity Inventory of the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab Hugo L. Kons Jr. Last Update: June 2001 Abstract A systematic check list of 489 species of Lepidoptera collected in the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab is presented, including 464 species in the superfamilies Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, and Noctuoidea. Taxa recorded in Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, and Thyrididae are also included. Moth taxa were collected at ultraviolet lights, bait, introduced Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), and by netting specimens. A list of taxa recorded feeding on P. notatum is presented. Introduction The University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL) contains 40 acres of natural habitats maintained for scientific research, conservation, and teaching purposes. Habitat types present include hammock, upland pine, disturbed open field, cat tail marsh, and shallow pond. An active management plan has been developed for this area, including prescribed burning to restore the upland pine community and establishment of plots to study succession (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/natl.htm). The site is a popular collecting locality for student and scientific collections. The author has done extensive collecting and field work at NATL, and two previous reports have resulted from this work, including: a biodiversity inventory of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) of NATL (Kons 1999), and an ecological study of Hermeuptychia hermes (F.) and Megisto cymela (Cram.) in NATL habitats (Kons 1998). Other workers have posted NATL check lists for Ichneumonidae, Sphecidae, Tettigoniidae, and Gryllidae (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/insect.htm). -
CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Contributions to a Biodiversity Inventory of the Late Summer Lepidoptera Species of Twin Swamps Nature Preserve in Posey County, Indiana By Hugo L. Kons Jr. & Robert J. Borth January 2012 DRAFT, For the North American Journal of Lepidoptera Biodiversity Abstract We present records for 435 species of Lepidoptera collected during mid and late August at Twin Swamps Nature Preserve in Posey County in southwestern Indiana, including 423 species of Macrolepidoptera and 29 species of Catocala (Noctuidae). Surveys were conducted with MV sheets, UV light traps, rotten banana bait, and diurnal searching. Habitat types surveyed in the preserve include hydric hardwood forest (swamp flatwoods), overcup oak slough, swamp cottonwood-bald cypress swamp, and old field with extensive sweet gum encroachment. All recorded Catocala species and twenty-five species potentially near the northern limit of their range are discussed. Acknowledgments We thank Roger Hedge and John Bacone of the Indiana DNR's Division of Nature Preserves for providing authorization for this research. Brain Abrell, Ron Crawford, and Thomas Westfall provided information on habitats and plants present in the preserve. Shirvani Abstract Noctuidae species are mostly plant feeding as caterpillars and nectar feeding as adults, functioning as herbivores, pollinators and prey, as well as include many species of economic importance. Here we intended to contribute to the fauna of seven Noctuidae subfamilies Metoponinae, Eustriotinae, Acontiinae, Cuculliinae, Oncocnemidinae, Psaphidinae and Eriopinae in some Iranian provinces. Numerous samplings were carried out in Khuzestan, Ilam, Fars, Kerman, and Khorasan-e Razavi provinces. A total of 31 Noctuidae taxa were collected and identified, among which there are 22 new provincial records from Kerman, Khuzestan, Fars and Ilam provinces. The species Oncocnemis rhodophaea Ebert, 1978 and nominotypical subspecies Asteroscopus syriaca (Warren, 1910) are newly reported for the fauna of Iran. -

The taxonomic status and correct generic placement of certain taxa belonging to Chytonix sensu lato (including the taxa associated with Paroligia Warren, 1913) were clarified (e.g. Speidel 1992, Lafontaine & Schmidt 2010, etc.), but the real diversity of the genus (see e.g. Poole 1989) and the composition of local faunas is rather obscure in the most recent catalogues (Heppner & Inoue 1992, Chen 1999, Kononenko & Pinratana 2013, etc.). Abstract We present here the checklist of moths (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) for the campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University, situated in the metropolis of Pune in the state Maharashra in India. We report identi/ication of 189 unique genera along with 154 unique species. Despite the relative small size of the observation area and the location being at the heart of a busy metropolis, the moths were found to be of diverse variety, with 26 different families and 76 tribes. The identifications of the species was crowd-sourced via iNaturalist.org. An automated program was developed to fetch the identi/ication and generate the list.
