ISAIAH’S CALL Based on: Isaiah 6:1-10
PREPARATION: In preparation ahead of time, it is well to read the story out loud, so you can both see the words and hear them spoken. After reading the story, close your eyes and imagine you are looking at the story taking place as you practice retelling the story out loud to check your memory. Then reread the story out loud to note where you made mistakes and try again. Repeat this process until you can tell the story smoothly and accurately. You may use your own words and cut down on the number of names, but stick exactly to the content of the Bible story.
INTRODUCTION: Bible storying is a powerful way to present Biblical truths to both adults and children. This is the first story on the life of Isaiah.
STORY: Tell the story of Isaiah’s call from Isaiah 6:1-10. Have the children act out the story, or do a puppet show or mime. Does anyone want to retell the story?
DISCUSSION: Use some of these questions or add your own. Observation questions: (What happened?) What did Isaiah see? Seraphs are angels. What did the seraphs say about the Lord? According to Isaiah, who had he seen? What did the Lord ask Isaiah? Was Isaiah willing to go? How did he reply?
Understanding questions: (Why?) Isaiah was a prophet, or messenger of God. What does a prophet do? The seraphs said, “Holy, holy, hoy is the Lord Almighty.” What does it mean to be holy? Isaiah replied that he was ruined, that he was a man of unclean lips. What did he mean by that? What happened when the live coal touched Isaiah’s mouth? What did the seraph mean when he said, “Your guilt is taken away and your sins atoned for”? The Lord asked God to be his messenger. What message was Isaiah to tell the people? Would the people understand and obey? Why or why not? Would the people want to hear God’s message to them?
Application questions: (How does this relate to me?) How does God talk to you today? Isaiah recognized that he was a sinful man, with unclean lips. How about you? Could you stand up before God and say, “I am innocent. I have done nothing wrong”? How can your sins be forgiven? How can you be made clean? What has God called you to do? Are you willing to say, “Here am I. Send me”? Are you willing to go wherever the Lord sends you?
Memory verse and coloring page: Isaiah 6:8. You can use a memory verse games to learn this.
Practice: Draw a picture of what Isaiah saw. Divide into pairs to practice telling this story. During the week, tell your family, friends and neighbors the story of Isaiah’s call.
