Updated Training For Direct Support Professionals

Updated Training for Direct Support Professionals

The ID and DS Waivers require that staff providing supports to individuals through

 Residential Support (either Congregate or In-home)  Personal Assistance  Day Support or  Prevocational services receive training in the characteristics of ID and appropriate interventions, skill building strategies and other methods of supporting individuals prior to providing direct support under the waiver. For many years this has been accomplished through the “Staff Orientation Workbook” or the College of Direct Support.

The “Staff Orientation Workbook” and accompanying test have been revised and updated through the efforts of CSB, private provider and ODS staff. The new version is now titled “Orientation Manual for Direct Support Professionals (DSP): Supporting People in their Homes and Communities.” Effective 7/1/12, all new direct support staff providing one of the above services must be trained using the new manual.

A new training session for supervisors/trainers of DSPs has also been devised. This will take the place of the “Staff Training Requirements” document (which took the place of the “Supervisor Video”). The training on the new materials will be presented to supervisors/trainers via live sessions conducted regionally by the ODS Community Resource Consultants in June. New Certificates will be issued to all training participants. All supervisors/trainers who will be using the “Orientation Manual” to prepare new DSPs MUST complete this training prior to utilizing the new materials. The new supervisor/trainer training will also be available on line after 7/1/12.

DSPs who have received training through the older materials (“Staff Orientation Workbook” and passed the accompanying test) are not required to retrain using the new materials; however, it is recommended that they do so in order to refresh and update their skill sets.

See attached for information on dates, locations and registration for the June training for supervisors/trainers.
