How to Catalog with Superscript and Subscript Via the Cataloging Menu and Via the Floating

Yoel Kortick How to catalog with superscript and subscript via the cataloging menu and via the floating keyboard

This document will show how to catalog the superscript and the subscript. It will also show how to configure the floating keyboard to include the superscript and subscript.

ONE Let's say we have a record like this, with 245 field:

24510 L $$aAfter drinking H₂O we calculated 10⁴.

TWO

In the above case we have a 2 in subscript in H₂O and a 4 in superscript in 10⁴.

THREE

The full list of superscript and subscript values for numbers may be found at http://unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2070.pdf.

FOUR The values may be entered either by 1. Using the menu "Enter Unicode Values" 2. Using the floating keyboard

FIVE

We will first show the menu "Enter Unicode Values". The Unicode value for subscript 2 is 2082. The Unicode value for superscript 4 is 2074.

You can also get the values in Aleph in directory $alephe_unicode yoelk@il-aleph07(a20_3):alephe/unicode>grep #SUBSCRIPT unicode_case 2080 2080 2080 #SUBSCRIPT ZERO 2081 2081 2081 #SUBSCRIPT ONE 2082 2082 2082 #SUBSCRIPT TWO 2083 2083 2083 #SUBSCRIPT THREE 2084 2084 2084 #SUBSCRIPT FOUR 2085 2085 2085 #SUBSCRIPT FIVE 2086 2086 2086 #SUBSCRIPT SIX 2087 2087 2087 #SUBSCRIPT SEVEN 2088 2088 2088 #SUBSCRIPT EIGHT 2089 2089 2089 #SUBSCRIPT NINE yoelk@il-aleph07(a20_3):alephe/unicode>grep #SUPERSCRIPT unicode_case 00B2 00B2 00B2 #SUPERSCRIPT TWO 00B3 00B3 00B3 #SUPERSCRIPT THREE 00B9 00B9 00B9 #SUPERSCRIPT ONE 2070 2070 2070 #SUPERSCRIPT ZERO 2074 2074 2074 #SUPERSCRIPT FOUR 2075 2075 2075 #SUPERSCRIPT FIVE 2076 2076 2076 #SUPERSCRIPT SIX 2077 2077 2077 #SUPERSCRIPT SEVEN 2078 2078 2078 #SUPERSCRIPT EIGHT 2079 2079 2079 #SUPERSCRIPT NINE

SIX

Thus to write H₂O the user can write H and then do "enter Unicode values" then enter 2082 and then again "enter Unicode values" (to leave the Unicode mode) and then enter O. To write 10⁴ the user can enter 10 and then do "enter Unicode values" then enter 2074 and then again "enter Unicode values" (to leave the Unicode mode).

Here is H₂O.

Part one Type H then activate the menu

Part two See on bottom left that you are in Unicode Mode. Enter value and add 2082.

Part three See that the subscript two gets added after the H

Part four Again activate the "enter Unicode values" (to leave the Unicode mode).

Part five Add the 0 as normal

SEVEN It is also possible to add the superscript and subscript to the floating keyboard.

Part one In …AL500\Alephcom\tab\keyboard.ini add one more to the number of tabs (if it was 7 make it 8)

[Tabs] NoTabs=8

Part two At the end of the file add however you want the new tab to appear, for example:

[Tab8] Caption=super and sub scripts NoCols=10 BtnWidth=40 BtnHeight=25

Part three Now add the Unicode values to …AL500\Alephcom\tab\keyboard.txt as follows: [super and sub scripts] !* 0-9 subscript \2080 \2081 \2082 \2083 \2084 \2085 \2086 \2087 \2088 \2089 !* 0-9 super script \2070 \00B9 \00B2 \00B3 \2074 \2075 \2076 \2077 \2078 \2079

Now they are in the floating keyboard
