A. This course will examine our past, present, and future. We will examine how we have lived, are living and will live based on facts and opinions. The course starts with the settlements of the early Europeans. We will then study how the settlers formed a new confederation, a constitution and a new government. The course then examines the challenges to that early government. We will look in depth at the constitution and the strength of that document. The next part of the course uncovers the westward movement of the citizens and the challenges the Indians and citizens had as the two very different peoples collided on the western frontier. After the challenges with the Indians, the infant country faced its toughest battle to date, the Civil War. We will study the tragedy of that war. The next half of the course examines the emergence of the U.S. as a world power from the late 1890’s through World War 1. The students will then take as trip through the roaring twenties and the great depression studying the good times of economic boom to the depressing times of the Great Depression. The course then snakes its way through World War II and the reconstruction of the world economies and their government. The last half of the book explores our nation after the Great Depression and the relationship it shares with the rest of the world as a world superpower. We will study the fall of the Soviet Union, the Cold War and foreign policy since 1992.
