Team Meeting and Planner Checklist

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP TEAM Date: September 30, 2008 Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Facilitator: Mike McMillan Recorder: Ben Worth Location: Regency Campus, Room 213/214 Present: Bonnie Nicholson, Sandy Carey, Bill Davis, Greg Feeney, Dave Hellmich, Debbie Holt, Charles James, Visitors: Jenny Jones, Pat Lefler, Mike McMillen, Vicki Partin, Chad Mueller, Ben Worth, Paul Turner Absent: Trish Miller Agenda/Issues Discussion Action Approval of September 16 There was no discussion. Agenda for both dates was and September 23 minutes approved. Student Complaints Dave Hellmich expressed his concern about students who take offense at legitimate classroom instruction of controversial content. Dave made the point that objectionable content and language may have a place in the college classroom if that content is tied to educational outcomes. He stressed the importance of academic affairs supporting faculty in this regard. And, yes, some students will get upset.

Let it be here recorded that amidst a discussion of offensive language, Chad Mueller dared utter aloud the word for the membri virilis. Defining Student Non- Following up a prior ALT discussion, Ben Worth provided ALT with the Attendance following definition of non-attendance:

Face-to-Face Instruction The face-to-face student who has never attended the face-to-face class is a "no show." This is verified by checking the instructor's course attendance records.

Online Instruction The online student who has never entered the Blackboard course shell is a ALT adopted the definition of "non- "no show." This is verified by checking the Performance Dashboard attendance" provided in the meeting. (Bb/Control Panel/Performance Dashboard/Days Since Last Attendance = "never").

Hybrid Instruction The hybrid student who has neither attended the face-to-face class nor entered the Blackboard course shell is a "no show." To be clear: either attending or entering Blackboard indicates attendance of the course.

1 Discussion ensued. Vicki Partin expressed concern about students in face-to-face classes who submit assignments via Blackboard and whether these students should be counted present. Debbie Holt noted that students in a face-to-face class may log in to Blackboard but not physically attend the class—if they attempt or submit assignments, then they definitely have “attended” class as far as she is concerned. Sandy Carey emphasized the need for a policy with clear and simple language.

Additional discussion involved linkages between Academic and Students Affairs, specifically, Financial Aid. Dave Hellmich asked for language clarifying the date for drop of non-payment.

*REQUEST* ADs should email Dave suggestions for best language about the dropping for non-payment procedure.

Ongoing PPE discussion Pat Lefler asked that ALT clarify what college committee chairs count as ALT members agreed that serving leadership. Ben Worth suggested that we allow chairing any college committee to as the chair of any college count as leadership while noting some positions are more significant than others. committee or action team has the Sandy Carey felt that some committees should not count as leadership because potential of counting as leadership. very little work is involved and faculty members might receive the misconception that their role on a given committee would automatically count as leadership. Dave Hellmich agreed with both Ben's and Sandy's position. ALT members agreed that service on Subsequent discussion addressed other forms of leadership such as serving on external boards may count as leadership when tied to the faculty governing boards. member's academic/instructional discipline.

Jenny Jones expressed concern about the lack of leadership opportunities at the system level.

*REQUEST* ADs may send Dave the names of individuals who need service at the system level.

Further discussion of the changing nature of educational leadership ensued. Sandy Carey provided some history on how leadership was defined in the old CCS system. Vicki Partin noted that faculty in her division, who have plenty of percentages in leadership, have opted to placed some leadership activities under internal service, where percentages would otherwise be low.

2 Greg Feeney encouraged ADs to review the 2008-09 PPEs for their faculty members to ensure that leadership is properly noted.

Rolling Schedule Bill Davis requested that ADs provide him with responses for the current draft rolling schedule. (The rolling schedule is the proposed two-year schedule plan, to be made available in Spring 2009. The plan will list college classes and roughly ALT set the deadline of 12/1 for when they are offered--e.g. morning, afternoon, night, online--within a two-year coordinators to complete the times and cycle). dates for the rolling schedule.

Discussion of the rolling schedule ensued. Members noted that the schedule is not a definitive list of all the classes the college will offer, just the ones they plan to offer; namely, just because it's not on the rolling schedule, doesn't mean the class can't be offered. Book Adoptions Dave Hellmich began by emphasizing that book adoption policies are not about co-opting the faculty member's right to select a textbook, but are to ensure that books for BCTC classes arrive in a timely fashion. Dave recommended that ALT set a date by which books shall be ordered. Faculty who fail to meet that date must use a book designated by the AD.

Discussion ensured. Paul Turner felt this would be easy to accomplish within his division. Pat Lefler noted that Summer Deans would be ill positioned to select books for courses outside their division. Greg Feeney emphasized the need for ADs to work with coordinators. Dave reiterated best practices involved when submitting textbooks orders: textbook orders are best submitted alongside the final copy of the semester schedule. Ben Worth felt this solution was not the best strategy for dealing his division and preferred to work directly with the faculty who do not submit their orders in a timely fashion. Bonnie Nicholson concurred. BCTC Blue + Dave Hellmich provided an overview to the BCTC Blue Plus program. This program allows BCTC students to enroll in UK classes while still attending BCTC. Some of the salient features of this program include:  Students must be full time (14 credit hours) and must pursue the AA/AS degree.  Students are limited to the number of classes they may take. Students in their first semester may take no UK classes. Second semester, three credits; third semester, three credits; fourth semester, six credits.  Students may not take classes which are also offered by BCTC.  Students may take classes at the 100, 200 or even 300 level. 3  In their final semester, students meet with an advisor to expedite the transfer to UK. Students will not have to complete a UK application.

Ongoing Items Update Pat Lefler expressed her deep concern about the spaces that appear after slashes on the syllabus checklist.

Dave noted that October 1 is the deadline for uploading syllabi to the S: drive. Adjournmen The meeting adjourned at 4:00 t
