2 Vision Statement To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.

Mission Statement To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.

Lions International Purposes

 To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.  To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.  To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.  To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.  To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.  To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.  To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.  To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

Lions Code of Ethics

 To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.  To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.  To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.  Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.  To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.  Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.  To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.  To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.

The financial impact of cancer should not destroy families as cancer destroys their children.

HELEN KELLER EMERGENCY FUND – This District 14-D fund, established by a Past District Governor is an emergency medical fund for eye and ear surgery. The fund is for those people who do not have medical insurance, Medicare, or public assistance. All requests need to be in writing. Please list the name of person, address, type of surgery, doctor, hospital, and the reason why this person is asking for assistance.

Today, over 375,000 proud alumni make HOBY stronger than ever. LCIF (www.lcif.org) - Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is the grant-making arm of Lions Clubs International. LCIF is Lions helping Lions serve others. It's the only Lions' foundation that serves the entire world and the nearly 1.35 million Lions. Working with Lions, LCIF prevents blindness. It provides food and clothing to victims of natural disasters. It also gives youth the tools to succeed through Lions-Quest, empowers the disabled through vocational training, and promotes health by equipping clinics and hospitals. LCIF is an efficient and effective charity. Administrative costs were 12.4 percent in 2004-2005, a very good ratio. Every dollar donated to LCIF goes to a grant. LCIF receives no club dues. LCIF has awarded US$375 million in grants since it began in 1968

LEADER DOGS FOR THE BLIND (www.leaderdog.org) – Located in Rochester, Michigan Leader Dogs for The Blind was founded in 1939 by Lions Club members, Charles Nutting, Don Schuur and S.A. Dodge. Leader Dog has successfully matched and graduated over 13,000 person / dog teams since its inception. The dream of these men became vision and independence for thousands. The facilities, located on the original 14 acres first purchased by the founders, have morphed from a farm with numerous outbuildings to a superb residence center, a stellar kennel, and well manicured grounds. This complex is home to our students, dogs, all services departments and the support staff that enable Leader Dog to enhance the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals from all over the world.

LIONS QUEST (www.lions-quest.org) – Lions Quest programs are school-based, comprehensive, positive youth development and prevention programs that unite the home, school and community, to cultivate capable and healthy young people of strong character, through life skills, character education, SEL, civic values, drug prevention, and service-learning education. Quest programs enhance the academic mission of K-12 schools through exceptional professional development, which is an essential component of implementation. Lions Quest programs are sponsored by Lions Clubs International Foundation, and recognized as highly effective programs by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY (www.nationalhistoryday.org) - National History Day (NHD) is a yearlong educational experience for students in grades 6-12, which culminates in competition similar to a science fair. Students can enter the competition individually or as a team, with projects that fit into one of five categories; exhibits, websites, documentaries, performances and papers. The main focus is for students to learn to use primary resources and interviewing skills to create the expected college-level product. National History Day’s Pennsylvania Region 9 serves over 300 students each year from Lancaster, Lebanon, York and Berks counties. Studies show that students who participate in NHD have higher SAT scores, better public speaking skills, outperform in college, and on the average receive higher paying jobs as compared to those who do not participate in NHD.

NORTHEAST PA LIONS EYE BANK (www.paeyebank.org) - The mission of the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Eye Bank, is to procure corneal tissue for sight restoration and/or improvement of visual impairments and to provide quality tissue for medical research seeking cures for eye disorders and diseases. It was founded in 1957 by local Lions Club members 30 who volunteered their time to recover eyes from funeral homes and transport them with the help of local police to hospitals for transplantation. The Eye Bank operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year serving 32 counties of Northeastern PA reaching west to State College, south to Maryland, north to New York and east to New Jersey. The Eye Bank is a non-profit agency governed by a Board of Directors who are Lions.

PA LIONS FOUNDATION (www.palions.org) - The PA Lion Foundation was incorporated as the charitable arm of the Pennsylvania Lions. The “Mission” of the Foundation is to assist those afflicted with sensory impairment, particularly those relating to vision and hearing. The Foundation awards Grants in support of meritorious projects and programs for the sensory impaired and joins with individual Lions Clubs in responding to local, community, and regional needs in Pennsylvania.

PA LIONS HEARING RESEARCH FOUNDATION (www.palions.org) - The Foundation, which was created by action of the 1978-79 State Council, initiates and supports research on hearing problems covering a range from embryonic research through adult ages. In keeping with the Lions of Pennsylvania interest on youth activities, special emphasis is encouraged on research to prevent deafness and hearing problems among our youth. The Foundation awarded its first research grants in July 1982 and continues to award grants annually each July.

PA LIONS SIGHT CONSERVATION & EYE RESEARCH FOUNDATION (www.palions.org) - The Foundation, which was created by action of the State Council in 1959, is unique, in that it directly supports research grants and is not involved in a day to day clinical activity. Lions/Lioness/Leos are silent partners in Eye Research being carried on in hospitals and medical colleges in Pennsylvania. Blindness is one of our major public health problems - every hour of every day five more people face a lifetime of darkness.

48 PROTOCOL

Protocol is the term applied to the seating arrangement of officers, dignitaries and guests. It reflects the way we as Lions run our meetings and being prepared to do our job and not embarrassing anyone, including yourself and the club. In our International Association, we sincerely try to respect rank, which is the basis of discipline, and the basis of a perfectly organized society. We do not subscribe to “protocol” simply because of a desire to outshine, but rather to prove that we are organized and have respect for the fundamental concepts of a discipline which we have imposed upon ourselves voluntarily.

The following are guidelines in that respect:

The American Flag 1. Display at ALL Meetings, at the President’s right as he/she faces the group 2. Pledge of Allegiance to be recited with meaning and dignity

Club Banner 1. Display at ALL meetings, at the President’s left as he/she faces the group, or directly behind the podium

Club Meetings

Recommended Head Table Seating Arrangement (facing members) 1. President – Center or left of podium 2. Guest – To President’s right ( Right of Podium) 3. Vice Presidents - Left of President 4. Club’s Secretary/Treasurer – Right of Guest
