Prioritization Proposal Biology 2 - Anatomy Laboratory Models Proposal Name Brief Description Provide necessary models for study to Human Anatomy and Physiology (one or two sentences) students.
Years on Priority List Zero. (5 points)
What will be achieved? Students enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology will be provided with an (10 Points) adequate set of models for study. Models of the skeleton, muscle system and other structures are used for study and for four laboratory exams each semester. Justification: Why should There are currently seven sections of Human Anatomy and Physiology I with a this be done? total enrollment of over 200 students. In spite of the high number of students, (20 points) there is only a single teaching model of most of the Anatomy models. These models include complex bones of the skull such as the sphenoid bone and models used to study the musculature of the arm and hand. As a result, many students, up to 32 per class section, often crowd around a single model. There have been multiple instances of students waiting for a turn with an important model but class ends before they have a chance to use it. Additionally, requests for open lab times cannot be consistently accommodated since a set of models is not available for study outside of class time. Enrollments in Human Anatomy and Physiology I have increased by 42.8% since 2004-05. Unfortunately, this rapid growth rate has outpaced the ability of the Biology Department to purchase and provide an adequate number of models for the students to study and learn. College Goals and/or “Achieve student success by placing the needs of learners first.” There are Objective(s) & Student currently not enough models for such a large student body. Additional models Learning. will increase the quality of laboratory learning and ensure that high standards (30 points) of education are maintained.
“Institutional growth.” The greatest growth in Biology enrollment has been in Biology 13. This expansion cannot be maintained without adequate laboratory models for study.
“Institutional effectiveness.” Teaching laboratories need models for study and for examinations. Student learning is adversely affected when an insufficient number of models limits learning opportunities. There are currently not enough models for study. By providing additional models to students we will be able to reduce model congestion during scheduled lab times and offer stocked, effective open study times. Assessment process: Anatomy and Physiology labs will be successful when an adequate number of How will you determine teaching models are available for study. This can be assessed by ensuring that your proposal has that: been successful? 1.) Models are ordered 2.) Models are used 3.) Stocked open lab times are offered 4.) Dean: Jim Parvizi I. Supporting Justification: This proposal asks for under $25,000 to purchase a total of 35 Anatomy models. New models will provide a set to be used during lab study times and an additional set to be used in the classroom. Even with the proposed purchases, there will be an average of only one model per 70 or more Anatomy students. Once these models are purchased, they will be cared for by the Biology full- time faculty and should be usable for an indefinitely, allowing them to benefit students for many years to come. The year-long Human Anatomy and Physiology series has grown significantly and currently accounts for 137.1 FTES, or 49.1% of all Biology FTES for the 2007-08 academic year.
