Materials  People in Authority Pictures  Who Makes the Rules at School? handout  Index Cards Time  15-20 minutes with additional time for extension activities Activity Sequence INTRODUCTION/HOOK Teacher Note: During this lesson students will view images of people of authority in school. To develop a greater relationship between students and those individuals in the school, use actual photos of the people who work at your school or invite them to your classroom for this activity. Generic images are included in case either option is not possible. 1. Project the People in Authority pictures. 2. Pose the following questions for discussion: Who are each of these people? What do they have in common? What do they have to with school rules? 3. Explain to students that each of these people have the power and authority to make rules in the school. A rule is a direction telling you how you should or should not act. ACTIVITY 4. Pass out the Who Makes the Rules at School? handout. 5. Direct student attention to each image on the People in Authority pictures. One by one discuss who the person is and some of the rules they make at the school. Teacher Note: Be sure to explain that each of these individuals have the authority to make rules because of their job at the school. 6. Instruct students to fill in each row on the handout for each person in authority with either text or illustrations. CLOSURE 7. Review the handout as a whole class. OPTIONAL EXTENSION SUGGESTIONS 1. Have students complete the same series of activities for people in authority in the community (police, firefighters, etc.) 2. Give each student an index card and have him or her create an illustration of one person in authority at school. Use these index cards to create a bulletin board. 3. Write a class letter thanking one of the authority figures for the job that they do. 4. Create a matching game with the authority figure and their job description. People in Authority Pictures
