School: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy (MLK) Meeting: SAC Meeting Date: 10/18/16

I. Introduction – Mr. Keith Lindsey (SAC Secretary), warmly welcomed faculty members, parents old and new, and students back for another School Advisory Council meeting.

Members present included: Keith Lindsey, Dr. Tamara Florence, Michelle Fountain, Tiesha Nelson, Jennifer Mann, Kimberley Nelson-Edwards, and Katina Deyounks.

Note: Mr. Keith Lindsey gave a motion to start the meeting at 5:35pm.

II. Principal’s Report – Ms. Moreau (Principal) stated that’s there’s a lot of positive things happening at MLK. First, the school grade improved from an “F” to a “D”. Because of the increase grade, the school staff is now eligible for A+ Funds. SAC will be presented with proposals for A+ Funds voting in accordance to the guidelines set forth by the state at the next meeting. Funds will be available in January. We are not exactly sure of the exact amount of funds available at this time.

SAC committee members and parents were encouraged and allowed to provide input as to how the funds should be used. SAC members and parents stated that they would like to see a portion of the money used to support reading K-5 by purchasing Time for Kids or Weekly Readers.

Our $100,000 bond initiative was approved for school infrastructure repair as previously stated. As a result, the school will be rewired to meet 21st century technological needs. More computers will be inserted in classrooms in the next two months because of the bond as well as Promethean boards. The money will also be used to re-sod the red clay area near the modular area.

Additionally, the school has hired two additional teachers in K/1 because of the increase numbers in those grade levels. We welcome our two new teachers to MLK.

As always Ms. Moreau encouraged parents to become school volunteers to see for themselves all the wonderful things happening at MLK.

III. Instructional Report – Dr. Florence presented the instructional report. She informed the SAC committee that Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) assessments is being given at this time to help create focus groups to better tailor the instructional needs of students. She also stated that all baseline testing has been completed in reading, math, and science. In addition, she informed the committee that the school is now working on in-house school city assessments in all content areas to see how well students are improving from their baseline assessments. FSA writing will occur in February in 4th and 5th grades. 10 is the highest score on the writing test a student can earn. Students are currently working toward obtaining that number.

Ms. Nelson-Edwards (parent) – asked that technology resources like myon, i- ready, and achieve3000 be added to the school website or school newspaper. Administration agreed to her suggestion because it supports home to school learning.

IV. School Improvement Plan (SIP) – Ms. Moreau stated that the SIP is our school’s governing document. She said, “It will be added to the school’s website and placed in the front office for public viewing shortly after finial approval”. She encouraged everyone to view the plan as soon as it’s available.

V. Upcoming Events– A+ Funds voting will be occurring during the next SAC meeting.

The SAC Committee will be apart of the decision making process regarding the A+ funds by voting on the proposals.
