World History Current Events Hold onto this paper. You will use Ms. Avar this format for each unit that we do Point Value: Articles in World History (you do not turn 15 points each - Honors - this page into me… just your work.)

Find an article from the news or business section of a reputable national or international newspaper which focuses on a country or region of interest to you. You may choose either a print story or research articles on the internet. You may NOT write an article about events occurring in the United States– this is WORLD history, and a good opportunity to learn about other places in our global community. Stories should involve issues that are significant and truly historical (avoid “pop” culture). It must have a story text equivalent to at least ½ page of a standard 8x10 piece of paper . Each current events article must be written within the same dates as the unit we are working on in class. You will turn in your current events article as the last assignment in your binders for each unit. The due date for each current events article is the day BEFORE your binders are due (ie. the day BEFORE exam day).

Pick topics that are interesting to you, not just the first thing you see. Try to browse different sites each time for variety:

Suggested print papers: San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, New York Times *If you use a print article, cut it out neatly (don’t tear it). Make sure you have the entire article. Many continue on other pages. Attach with glue, tape or staples (no paper clips) the article on a piece or pieces of paper that you can put in your binder when three hole punched. Fix the article in such a way that I can easily unfold it if necessary to view the whole article. Write the name of the newspaper and the date of the article on the same page to which you have affixed your article.

YOU MUST: Read the headline and look up any words you don’t know. Understand the headline before you read the article. Look at any photos, graphics, and captions. Finally, read the article, highlighting important parts.
