Dear ESL Teachers and Campus Administrators,

The ESL Summer Academy for currently enrolled middle school students identified as eligible English Learners (ELs) will be held in June. San Antonio ISD provides a summer program for English Learners to accelerate their language development and content knowledge. The curriculum will focus on language development and essential knowledge and skills that address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of students. The program is designed for students who are in their first three years in U.S. schools and for students who continue to demonstrate limited English proficiency.

What: ESL Summer Academy 2017

Who: Currently enrolled middle school students identified as English Learners and Recent immigrants (in U.S. 3 years or less) in 6th and 7th grade

Where: ESL Site: Will Rogers Elementary School

When: June 7-30, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Notification: The campus principal will send a Parent Notification Letter and a Student Enrollment Form to the parents.

Transportation: Students will be transported by bus from their home school and taken to the designated summer school site. The bus will return the students to the home school at the end of the day.

Clustered Schools: Students will attend the summer school site that receives students from the school in which they are enrolled.

Class Size: 25:1

Teachers: Certification required: ESL certification

Curriculum: The curriculum focuses on ESL Science and Social Studies content with an emphasis on vocabulary and reading comprehension. In addition, instruction will be enhanced through the use of sheltered instruction strategies which will facilitate the acquisition of language and content. DEADLINES:

April 11, 2017 Distribute Parent Notification Letter and Student Enrollment Form to parents.

April 27, 2017 Parents return signed Student Enrollment Form to their child’s school.

May 1, 2017 Student Enrollment Forms, Cover Letter and Parent Communication Log are due. Please scan the Student Enrollment Forms, the Cover Letter and the Parent Communication Log and e-mail to Maria Gomez @ [email protected] or personally deliver the documents to the Bilingual/ESL & Migrant Department at the Burnet Learning Center, Portable 554.

May 12, 2017 The Bilingual/ESL & Migrant Department sends Student Acceptance Letters to campuses for distribution.

May 26, 2017 Student Profile Forms with assessment data are completed and submitted. Please scan the Student Profile Forms and e-mail to Maria Gomez @ [email protected] or personally deliver the documents to the Bilingual/ESL & Migrant Department at the Burnet Learning Center, Portable 554. . May 29, 2017 The Bilingual/ESL & Migrant Department sends out a Reminder Flyer to be distributed to individual students.

Your child has been recommended to participate in the ESL Summer Academy 2017. He/she will attend the ESL Summer Academy at Will Rogers Elementary, June 7-30, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Daily attendance is necessary so that your child gains the full benefit of the ESL Summer Academy.

The academy will integrate ESL with Science and Social Studies content in order to provide students with vocabulary development and background information. The curriculum consists of thematic units loaded with instructional strategies and reading techniques that will facilitate learning in all classes.

Transportation will be provided from the home school to the designated summer school site. Students will be picked up at their home campus each morning. Buses will return students to their home campus each afternoon. Parents have the responsibility of ensuring that their son/daughter arrives at school on time each morning and is picked up on time each afternoon. Breakfast and lunch will be served daily at summer school. Breakfast will be served from 8:00 a.m – 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Please complete the Student Enrollment Form and return it to your child’s school by April 27, 2017. If accepted, your son/daughter will receive an Acceptance Letter before the end of the school year.

Su hijo/a ha sido recomendado/a para participar en la Academia de Verano de Inglés como Segundo Idioma del verano 2017. La Academia de Verano se llevará a cabo en la escuela Primaria Will Rogers del 7 de junio al 30 de junio de 2017, de las 8:00 a.m. a las 3:00 p.m. Es indispensable que su hijo/a asista todos los días para que se beneficie de este programa.

Las clases de inglés como segundo idioma integrarán los objetivos de inglés como segundo idioma con ciencias y estudios sociales para proveer a los estudiantes con el vocabulario y contenido que necesitan en sus clases regulares. El currículo consiste de unidades de estudio utilizando estrategias de instrucción y técnicas de lectura que ayudarán a facilitar el aprendizaje en todas las clases.

Habrá transportación de las escuelas secundarias a la escuela de verano. Los alumnos tendrán que llegar a la escuela a la que asisten durante el año escolar y serán regresados a este punto en la tarde. Es la responsabilidad de los padres que su hijo/hija llegue a tiempo diariamente a la escuela. También es la responsabilidad de los padres recoger a su hijo/a. El almuerzo y la comida serán ofrecidos diariamente en la escuela de verano. El almuerzo será ofrecido de 8:00 a.m. a 8:30 a.m. y la comida será de 11:30 a.m. a 12:00 p.m.

Por favor, complete la matrícula y regrésela a la escuela antes del 27 de abril de 2017. Si es aceptado, su hijo/a recibirá una carta de aceptación antes del último día de clases de este año escolar.
