Media Violence Increases Violence in Society

Media Violence Increases Violence in Society (By Carl M. Cannon)

1. Does Cannon believe that media violence causes real violence? What proof does he give to support his assertion?

2. What made the TV industry more open to curbing TV violence?

3. Explain the idea that TV doesn't cause violence, it reflects it. Does Cannon agree or disagree? Why?

4. What do you think about University of Kansas Professor Aletha C. Huston's comment "Virtually all independent scholars agree that there is evidence that television can cause aggressive behavior" quoted in Cannon's article (on top of the third page of the article).

5. What do you think of Cannon's statement just below it where he say's " There have been some three thousand studies of this issue- eighty-five of them major research efforts- and they all say the same thing. Of the eighty-five major studies, the only one that failed to find a causal relationship between television violence and actual violence was paid for by NBC?" Do you believe him? Why or why not?

6. Do you think it's possible that there might be a correlation between two variables without one necessarily causing the other? Why or why not? How would your answer refute or support Cannon?
