We invite applications for this post which has arisen through reorganisation within the department. The Service is based at Woodend Hospital which has an excellent range of investigative and rehabilitation facilities. The postholder will join one of the largest departments of geriatric medicine, with exciting opportunities for clinical work and research in secondary and community care settings at a time when innovative redesign and provision of new services are planned or taking place. Active involvement in under/postgraduate education is also anticipated. It is likely that the University of Aberdeen will accord honorary status of Senior Clinical Lecturer. The Department of Rehabilitation and Medicine for the Elderly are closely linked and there are established services supporting Stroke, Orthogeriatrics and Parkinson’s disease. There are also considerable developments in the field of community geriatrics with further expansion planned and exciting opportunities exist to advance cooperative working with primary care and CHP services. A review of the Day Hospital is underway with a proposal to introduce a rapid assessment clinic for patients based in the community to reduce acute general medical admissions. A Falls Service is also being progressed and it is envisaged that this together with the development of Consultant affiliated GP clusters will enhance our already proactive department. This will involve the transfer of acute geriatrics to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary site. The likely timescale for this move is the next 12 to 18 months.

Candidates with any special interest in a related field will be actively encouraged to develop their area of expertise. Any interest could be accommodated. Involvement with general (internal) medicine can also be arranged and audit is encouraged.
