NEWS AND REPORTS Volunteers

Volunteering is a prerequisite of membership and the more members who can help, the lighter the load for those members past and present who always do volunteer and the more events we can offer our members. If you have not yet volunteered this year (or nominated a someone else) please get in touch with Bridget Evans who is our Volunteer Co-ordinator and let her know where you might be able to offer some help over the coming months. [email protected]. Most of our Committee members work full time and four of them don’t even have a child in Pony Club so please do what you can to help and don’t always leave it to others. We now have a full house of volunteers for Marsh Gibbon Pony Show and Gawcott One Day Event but we still need volunteers at Area Competitions. Helping at Camp does not count towards your volunteering quota (sorry!). There will be four events running in 2018 that we will also need help with.

Bicester Branch Membership Numbers on the Up Our Branch has always had a very healthy number of members but this year we have had a big increase and are significantly up on last year. Well done to everyone who makes our Branch so brilliant – organisers and members alike. ------Yogi Breisner Clinic Lucie Oakey and Clara Petrillo’s names were picked out of a hat to take part in the Yogi Breisner Clinic taking place at Primrosehill Farm, Gawcott in July. This is the most amazing opportunity for them to receive instruction from the former British Eventing Team Coach. Lucky girls! ------New Joining Age at Bicester Branch

Children can now join the Bicester and Warden Hill Hunt Branch of the Pony Club at any age but you need to be in Reception year to go to Mini Camp. ------

BYRDS Dressage Success for Bicester Members

Amber Morris and Harry Corkett have been chosen to represent Central Region at BYRDS inter regionals this year. Many congratulations to them. Amber has been selected as a B squad rider (elementary level) to represent BYRDS Central Region for the Inter-Regionals to be held at Keysoe on the 1st/2nd July 2017 on Bernwode Golden Delicious. This national competition is held over two days and the riders are judged on their riding as well as their horse/pony’s way of going.

Sophie Hunt on her pony, Tilly, has also been named as one of the reserve fledgling riders.

World Horse Welfare Petition to Stop Live Transportation of Horses for Slaughter

The Horse and Hound along with Roly Owers, the CEO of World Horse Welfare, is fighting to stop the transportation of live horses for slaughter across Europe. A ban is within reach and they have been asking Horse and Hound readers to sign an online petition against this. Here is the link to the website where you can click (without watching the video if you would rather not) to sign. As horse lovers we should not be turning a blind eye and leaving it to others.

Mini Camp Helpers Needed

Senior helpers needed for Mini Camp! We are looking for around sixteen Seniors to help at this year’s Mini Camp. Priority will be given to those members going to Senior camp this year. It is being held at Horwell Farm, Baynards Green, OX27 7SQ. Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 25th - 27th July, 9.30am - 3.30pm. Road Rider Badge

Nine of our members took their Road Rider Badge (compulsory if you’re going to be taking your C Test) at Field Farm last weekend. This badge is taken very seriously: it’s examined strictly and takes several hours. Bezzy Cannon was the examiner and put the children through their paces very thoroughly indeed! We’re pleased to say that all nine passed. Well done to: Nancy Simpson, Phyllie Dolan, Susie Dolan, Amelie Gregory, Charlotte Gregory, Jessica Smith, Charlotte Laurie, Megan Churchill, Eloise Edgar Gibson and Rafe Gordon. ------

Cross Country Rally – Gawcott

It’s always sunny for our cross country rally at Primrosehill Farm, Gawcott and this year was no exception. Mr and Mrs Strangman very kindly provided drinks and buns. Twenty of our members had a great morning schooling round the fences ably instructed by Mandy Holloway and Laura Jackson.

(left) Instructor, Mandy Holloway, (on the skewbald) with Susie Dolan, Mia Ash, Nancy Simpson, Mimi Price and Keeley North “We had a ball and the girls got to "ride like stink" with the wonderful Mandy Holloway - such a fun morning at a brilliant venue”. HELEN DAY

Weston on the Green, Nr Bicester 01869 350816 SPECIALIST HORSE FEED ADVICE FROM THE VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE PAUL SCOTT

Rider of the Month – Phyllie Dolan I started riding when I was 7, at Hartwell Stables, and then with Sharon Firmin on her pony Rosie. We then got our first pony, Minnie, a Welsh Section A. I did lots of shows with Minnie. I then got Annie on loan. Annie was an amazing pony and I did lots of rallies and shows on her. We joined Pony Club two years ago and for my first camp I borrowed Rosie as Annie had sadly died the week before (she was quite an old pony). Camp was great and I learned loads.

I then got Sunny on loan. He is the best pony. Phyllie riding Sunny I’ve learned so much on him. We go to rallies and competitions regularly.

He’s 21 so we are careful about how much we do but it doesn’t stop us. I did my first cross country competition at Bignell this year and I’m going to do the One Day Event at Gawcott which I’m nervous and excited about. My plans for the rest of the year are to enjoy Camp as much as I did last year and become a more confident rider.

June’s Rider of the Month will be Georgie Lewis. ------

Rockingham Horse Trials Inter Branch Show Jumping – May

Another successful day for our Branch. Those in the 75 and 85 cm classes will have been up at dawn and on the road by 6 am with their ponies gleaming and plaited to get to Rockingham which is quite a distance – you deserve a well done just for that!

Team 1st in the 75 cm – Mimi Price, Nancy Simpson, Megan Churchill, Amelie Gregory Team 6th in the 75 cm – Clara Petrillo, Izzy Partridge (both girls riding young ponies), Susie Dolan and Keeley North.

Special mention to Lucie Oakey who had a great day and did several clear rounds in the 80 cm and 90 cm classes.

There were lots of really beautifully ridden rounds in the 90 cm by Isabella Smith, Katie Leach, Ella Baskerville, Shakira Polden, Saskia Mohan, Annie Simpson, Lucie Oakey and Zoe Kerr but sadly no rosettes this year. They all rode with great maturity. ------

Hambleden Horse Trials – 3 June

Our Branch stormed the Novice Class (90 cm) with Zoe Kerr 4th on Norman, Annie Simpson 5th on Ted and Katie Leach 6th on Connie (in each of their sections). All of them were double clear with good dressage scores. They were also team third.

Zoe Kerr was also 4th in the Open Class (1m 10) on Tarzan which is the most enormous achievement especially as she was competing against horses. Connie Adams was also competing in the Open on Toby and did her usual accomplished dressage, she had an unfortunate fence down show jumping but was clear cross country. These jumps are huge and the competition is red hot: Zoe and Connie, we salute you! ------

Grafton Hunt Pony Club ODE – Foxhill, Eydon

There were placings at the Grafton ODE for our members:

Keeley North (2nd), Mia Ash (4th) in the Junior Class Susie Dolan (6th) in the 75 cm Katie Robinson (4th) in the 85 cm on Haribo (double clear) ------

Inter Branch Show Jumping Hyde Heath

The Bicester had another cracking day at Hyde Heath on 10 June. We should firstly thank Kirstie and Clare for coming all the way to help warm up the teams and lend their support – we were all really glad of their help. Thanks also to Sue Leach who organised us all beforehand by sorting out the teams and sending in our entries. Well done to all the parents who were up late the night before making sure ponies and tack were super shiny ready for the eagle-eyed tack and turnout stewards.

Novice (90/95 cm): Lucie Oakey, Katie Robinson, Annie Simpson and Clara Petrillo – TEAM 5th. and double clear for Clara Petrillo on Lady. 1st in the Tack and Turnout (well done parents!) Katie Robinson, Annie Simpson, Clara Petrillo and Lucie Oakey (left)

Regionals (80/85 cm): Izzy Partridge, Sofia Wright, Mimi Price, Helena Pryce. They had an amazing first round going into the second round on only four faults so there was all to play for. The jumps were very full up in the second round and there was an unfortunate pole here and there but all the girls rode stylishly and with great team spirit. Sofia Wright had a double clear on her lovely pony.

Regionals (80/85 cm): Nancy Simpson, Megan Churchill, Susie Dolan, Keeley North. This team went through to the second round on an amazing zero faults. They were all super brave with the jumps being very big indeed and performed really well but with a pole or two down they weren’t in the rosettes this year.

There were 27 teams entered into the Regionals Class from Pony Clubs all over Area 12. This class is fiercely competitive as you can qualify for the National Finals at Keysoe in September. All the girls represented our Branch well and rode with courage and style.

Phyllie and Rafe with their double clear rosettes

Mini (70/75 cm): Phyllie Dolan, Rafe Gordon, Mia Ash, Jonty Gordon. We went into the second round on three clears which was so exciting and such an achievement. In the second round the jumps went up a lot but we still managed to get two clear rounds. Double clears from Phyllie Dolan on Sunny and Rafe Gordon on Noah.

Tetrathlon Swim Training – Stowe School, MK18 5EH

Thursdays 15 June, 22 June, 29 June, 6 July, 13 July, 20 July

7 – 8 pm

Bicester Pony Club has sole use of the pool with one / two swimming coaches (dependent on numbers) and a lifeguard all of whom are highly qualified to help your child improve in their style, technique and speed. They will teach those who need to learn or to improve, their diving and tumble turns. It is amazing how quickly the children improve in a short space of time with dedicated training. Once we have established the swimming groups at the end of each session the children can take part in a mock competition, which is friendly and competitive at the same time. Each child is timed for their number of laps within the allocated time for their age group, striving to improve their personal best each week. We will support and encourage the children to keep a record of their Personal Bests across all the disciplines over the coming months. All children participating must be able to swim a length of the pool (25m). Spaces will be limited, book early to avoid disappointment. Those who show an interest in joining Tetrathlon Teams will be given priority over booking swimming sessions.

When booking online – just book one date (15 June) and it will allow you to pay for all six.

Show Jumping Rallies – Fox Covert Farm, Marsh Gibbon

Saturday 1 July (Show Jumping Rally 8) Wednesday 9 August (Show Jumping Rally 9)

Show Jumping rallies are open to all members, from those just starting out over fences (even cross poles of 45 cm – you just need to be off the lead rein) to regular competitors and those jumping over 1m. They are held monthly, indoors in winter and outside at other times. Rides are of three or four people. We are lucky to have the very experienced Rhian Jones as our regular instructor. She is known for her energy, enthusiasm and how quickly she is able to improve your riding and your horse/pony. Those who are able to attend her sessions regularly benefit immensely from her consistent approach, and learn to train their pony/horse for competition success. Every session begins with a warm up appropriate to your riding level, younger members being guided to improve themselves and senior members expected to concentrate on improving “Thank you for the great rally. their horse’s way of going and think about warm up exercises to use in competition. Each lesson then goes on to link fences Rhian is a miracle worker!” Penny Stephens together into full courses of jumps so by the end of your hour lesson you will have jumped several different courses. For the “Rhian had her jumping in canter younger members this can be an achievement in itself. More and smiling!!! Big step forward experienced members are expected to do much more than just for Mia so big thank you!” ‘get round’, they are taught to concentrate on helping their Hayleigh Ash horse by keeping them balanced at all times, recovering quickly from errors and the correct riding of different fences and combinations.

Organiser: Heidi Smith ([email protected]) Cost: £15.
