Multigenre Research Paper

Multi-genre Research Project

How do authors/artists change the world through their works? How can you?

What is a multi-genre research project?

A multi-genre project combines research, experience, and imagination. This project is based on the social justice issue that you chose to research. You will be integrating information learned through your research into 4-5 original genres (Genres are different types of writing or ways of presenting information.). One of your 5 genres may be a found genre that was created by another individual, but must be accompanied by a selection rationale in the endnotes and be cited in the works cited. Each of the genres will make a point of its own, yet remain connected to the whole. Besides including different genres, your multi-genre project will also include at least 3 distinct voices or points of view.

Why would I assign this multi-genre research project? This assignment is enjoyable for all concerned (you, the student who creates it, and me, the teacher who has to grade it) for the following reasons:

 You chose to research a topic that you are personally interested in.

 You can show what you learned in many creative and interesting ways that reflect your topic.

 You can use your other talents like artistry, music, film making, scrapbooking, etc.

 I get to learn about the many interesting topics that you have chosen.

 I can see your creativity in the ways you present the information you have learned.

 This isn’t a boring assignment!

Final Project Requirements:  Opening letter  5 different genres (see attached Genre Menu)  3 points of view  5 research sources minimum integrated into final project  Connector  End notes  Cover Page  Works Cited

Process Requirements:  Actively participate in Writer’s Groups and complete Conference Sheet  Complete individual conferences with me.  Each original genre needs multiple drafts with evidence of revision(keep all material).

What are the genre choices?

Look at the list of genres on the Genre Menu, and consider which ones would work best to tell your story. You need at least 5 different genres, at least three of which need to come from Writing Options section. You’ll be writing these genres fresh, recreating dialogue and events based on your research, experience, and imagination. Also, make sure that you fully understand how to write the genres that you choose. You will be graded on your ability to imitate the characteristics of the genre. It’s a good idea to refresh yourself by reading a few real life examples of the genres that you choose. Try to make them look as realistic as possible (ex: make emails look like emails!) They don’t all need to be typed, but they do all need to look neat and professional. GENRE MENU

How will this be graded?

Your Multi-Genre Research Project will graded using the Multi-Genre Research Project To-Do-List. Your project is worth 330 points total, not including research. Because this is a culmination of all the learning this year and it requires a lot of individual effort, that is why it is weighted so heavily. For me to provide you with thoughtful feedback and assessment of your work there will be several mini-due-dates as outlined on the Multi-Genre Research Project To-Do-List. By the presentation time most of your points will already have been earned and recorded (SO DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!).

NOTE

On days Writing Groups are scheduled you must both attend and be prepared. It will be near to impossible to make up your Writing Group. Your group members are counting on you. Your Writing Group is a team. You have put a lot of time and effort into this project as well as your team mate. You owe the respect and courtesy to give good and accurate feedback for you and your team to be successful in changing your world through you art or work.
