(Other sports will start tryouts on Monday, August 7th)
Highlights:
The fall season is upon us with football practice starting up and the rest of the fall sports starting Monday, August 7th.
Football – We will see the largest freshmen class to date participating in football. An indicator of our growth is noted in the fact that we do not have nearly enough jerseys to outfit the freshmen team. As of this morning, 71 freshmen are going out for football leaving us some 20 jerseys short, a nice problem to have. Our varsity and JV numbers are near 50 apiece bringing the total number of participants to 151.
Expectations are very high for the program. After several conversations with Coach De La Torre and his staff I come away with a feeling that this year may be our best yet as the players and staff look to move deeper into the playoffs this year.
Men’s Basketball – 30 potential players meet early in the morning for conditioning. Jalen Richards is currently being recruited by several division 1 schools including Stanford.
Baseball – Coach James Stevens was introduced as the new head baseball coach. On another note, the San Tan Valley Patriots completed their season ranked number 2 in the state and participated in the Arizona American Legion Tournament held in Surprise, AZ. Though the team did not fare as well as anticipated the experience and success enjoyed in their first year may actually help produce 3 teams being sponsored in the area next year including incorporating players from Florence into the system.
Softball – Coach Green and her staff held a camp July 16-18th youth in the district. In all she had on average 20 participants each night. Poston Butte Sports update.

As we begin the fall season we are anticipating a lot of success. Numbers are up as far as participation is concerned and our coaches are eager for the start of a new season.
We are beginning to develop partnerships within the community that are producing some phenomenal results. A few examples include the Knicker Brigade helped raise nearly $6000 for our student athletes. They will present a check for that amount at our homecoming game on Sept 14th. The Pinal county Sheriff’s office will be providing $5000 in RICO funds to help the athletic department purchase needed equipment and help those who otherwise could not afford to participate in sports.
We are developing working relationships with Legion Post 97 in providing 2 additional baseball teams next summer for our kids, the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce, as well as the San Tan Valley Small Business association. It is our hope that these relationships will develop into long-term partnerships in bolstering our athletic programs ensuring that no one who wants to participate will be denied the opportunity due to cost.
I am excited for the upcoming season and for the opportunity of promoting the Bronco name throughout San tan Valley.
Respectfully,
Gordon Ray, M.Ed Assistant Principal - Athletic Director Poston Butte High School
