Dear Parents/Guardians,

Yr 9 Battlefields Trip – Friday 19 th January 2018

As part of the Year 9 History syllabus, pupils study the First World War in the autumn term. To support and develop their knowledge and understanding, there is the opportunity to visit Ypres to experience the trench systems, and to see both Allied and German cemeteries. There will also be a visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum, which demonstrates the experiences of typical soldiers in the trenches at Ypres. Local soldiers from the Winnersh area will be tracked in an interactive exhibit through the newly refurbished museum. The trip will take place on Friday 19th January 2018.

Pupils will travel by coach from school and onto Le Shuttle. They should arrive at school at 05:00 to depart to Folkstone, returning at approximately 20:30; timings will be confirmed nearer to the date of travel.

ALL PUPILS WILL NEED A PASSPORT AND EHIC (HEALTH CARD), and these will need to be sent in at a later date. For those without an EHIC, visit your local post office, or apply online at www.ehic.org.uk.

IMPORTANT: Boys with non-EU passports who do not have a Shengen Visa The school needs to apply to the British Council to obtain permission for him to go. Please let us know if this is this case with your son.

Pupils will not be required to wear school uniform, but should come sensibly dressed. They must bring wellington boots, or other water resistant footwear to change into to go around the trenches. They should be provided with breakfast, a packed lunch and an evening snack. Boys will only need, at most, £15-20 spending money in Euros to purchase souvenirs if they wish.

The cost of the trip is £81 which includes: transport, Le Shuttle, entry to cemeteries, Coronet Wood Trenches, and Flanders Fields Museum, and a hot snack and drink for lunch in a local hotel. In order to secure a place, I would be grateful if you could return the attached booking slip, together with the deposit of £20 and EV2 consent form, to the Admin Office (cheques payable to ‘Forest School'), by Monday 2rd October 2017. The balance of £61 will be due by Wednesday 1st November 2017. There are 90 places and, if the trip is oversubscribed, we will take into consideration “Effort Grades”, and if necessary draw names from a hat to decide who takes part, should your son be unsuccessful your full deposit will be returned. For those who are in receipt of qualifying benefits, there may be some financial assistance towards funding this trip. Please contact Mrs Farley, Parent Support Adviser, Tel: 0118 9781626, Ext 282, or email:
