7 th and 8 th Grade Social Studies Roots (Alex Haley’s T.V. miniseries) Essential Question: How did abolitionists try to end slavery? Aim:

 What hardships did a slave face living on a plantation?

 What type of punishment did a slave receive for trying to escape?

 How did African slaves deal with severe punishment? Do Now: Is it possible to revolt against slavery? Explain your answer. Word of the Day:

1 Slave Codes- somebody who is forced to work for somebody else for no payment and is regarded as the property of that person. Slave codes gave slave-owners absolute power over the African slaves.

The following objectives will be covered in this chapter:

2 Objectives:

 To introduce a worldwide view of slavery from Roman Era to 1700’s

 To view the Movie, Roots and relate Alex Haley’s T.V. miniseries to slavery in America

 To understand the series of events and resulting conditions that led to the development of slavery

 To understand how different experiences, beliefs, values, traditions, and motives cause individuals and groups to interpret historic events and issues from different perspectives

 Retaining African Culture

 The African Diaspora

 Slave Codes

3 The following content areas will be discussed when they apply to the class lesson for this week:

Slavery

 The Slave Trade

 The Northwest Ordinance

 Three-fifths clause

 Slave Codes Objectives:

 What effect did slave codes have on the African slaves?

 How were slaves punished for escaping?

 How did African slaves secretly retain their identity or culture?

4 Procedure:

 The students will participate in a Powerpoint demonstration by the teacher on Roots. The Students will take notes on a question sheet provided by the teacher on the Powerpoint presentation and movie segment presented today.

 Students will listen to readings by slaves from the PBS series, The History of Slavery in America.

6 Evaluation: They will answer 2 out of 3 of the following questions with 80% accuracy in a written or oral quiz:

 Explain how slaves were punished

 How did slave codes affect the daily lives of African slaves?

 Explain the purpose of slave auction Homework: 1. See the Homework Calendar at www.mrzindman.com . 2. The students will complete the Roots question sheet on today’s movie segment.
