<p> 7 th and 8 th Grade Social Studies Roots (Alex Haley’s T.V. miniseries) Essential Question: How did abolitionists try to end slavery? Aim: </p><p> What hardships did a slave face living on a plantation?</p><p> What type of punishment did a slave receive for trying to escape? </p><p> How did African slaves deal with severe punishment? Do Now: Is it possible to revolt against slavery? Explain your answer. Word of the Day:</p><p>1 Slave Codes- somebody who is forced to work for somebody else for no payment and is regarded as the property of that person. Slave codes gave slave-owners absolute power over the African slaves.</p><p>Common Core: R.1.8.2 NYSS: Unit 6: Division and Reunion-SLAVERY</p><p>I. SLAVERY AND THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR</p><p>The following objectives will be covered in this chapter:</p><p>2 Objectives:</p><p> To introduce a worldwide view of slavery from Roman Era to 1700’s </p><p> To view the Movie, Roots and relate Alex Haley’s T.V. miniseries to slavery in America</p><p> To understand the series of events and resulting conditions that led to the development of slavery</p><p> To understand how different experiences, beliefs, values, traditions, and motives cause individuals and groups to interpret historic events and issues from different perspectives</p><p> Retaining African Culture</p><p> The African Diaspora</p><p> Slave Codes</p><p>3 The following content areas will be discussed when they apply to the class lesson for this week: </p><p>Slavery</p><p> The Slave Trade</p><p> The Northwest Ordinance</p><p> Three-fifths clause</p><p> Slave Codes Objectives: </p><p> What effect did slave codes have on the African slaves?</p><p> How were slaves punished for escaping?</p><p> How did African slaves secretly retain their identity or culture?</p><p>4 Procedure: </p><p> The students will participate in a Powerpoint demonstration by the teacher on Roots. See the Homework Calendar at www.mrzindman.com . 2. The students will complete the Roots question sheet on today’s movie segment. </p><p>8</p>
