Course Description: The purpose of this course is to give students without previous experience the knowledge and skills needed to use computers effectively in college and beyond. Emphasis will be placed on using software packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases, as well as using the Internet.

Course Materials: There is no required text. All necessary materials will be provided at http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~dcc20 or through links provided at said location. It will be necessary to have access to Microsoft Office 2007. All university students may obtain their own copies through the university, by visiting the Software Licensing Services in 105 Bellefield Hall, 8:30am – 5:00pm, M-F (Pitt ID required). Microsoft Office 2007 can also be used at all campus computing labs, see http://www.technology.pitt.edu/network- web/computing-labs.html for locations and more information. Grade Distribution: Item Weight Homework Assignments 30% Lab Assignments 30% Midterm Exam 10% Final Exam 20% Attendance 10%

Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken at the start of every class. Each student is allowed up to three unexcused absences. Once a student has had three unexcused absences, the student’s total grade will be reduced by one percent, up to a maximum of ten percent, for each unexcused absence thereafter. Participation may be used to determine borderline grades.

Late Policy: Items submitted late will be reduced by a letter grade for each day late. Students should notify the instructor as soon as possible (before the due date) if a conflict arises that prevents timely submission of materials. Items will not be accepted starting 4 days after the due date without a valid excuse.

Academic Integrity: If you are caught cheating in this course, at the very minimum, you will receive a 0 for the assignment and may potentially receive an F for the entire course. A second offense will definitely cause you to receive an F for the entire course.
