Standards S1 C8 PO6 Summarize the U.S.'s role in the development and use of the atomic bomb
Content Objective(s) Students will examine the impact of the United States' decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan and decide whether or not it was an effective decision.
Language Objective(s) Listening and Speaking - Student will express orally his or her own thinking and ideas; Student will listen actively to ideas of others Reading - Student will analyze written information to determine the practicality of the use of the atomic bomb Student will acquire English language vocabulary and use it in correct context Writing - Student will express his or her own thinking and ideas in writing

Preparation Set up laptop and projector Photocopy "When the A-Bomb Fell" Prepare discussion questions Anticipatory Set - Read "When the A-Bomb Fell" by Yoshihiro Kimura aloud to class or have students read silently and discuss.
Lesson Sequence Modeling - Explain to students that the reason for the US dropping the bomb on Japan was to end the war sooner and save lives. Guided Practice - explore and discuss each section of the website http://athousandsuns.com. The website is presented in a Flash format that is very interactive and explores the atomic bomb and its use thoroughly. All you have to do is click on a section. It even has dramatic clips of nuclear testing. Discussion will come naturally as a result of the web site, however, you may wish to develop specific questions of your own.
http://ushistory.tusd.us/participants.htm Application/Practice Independent Practice - Have students write a journal entry in which they decide if use of the atom bomb was an effective way to bring about an end to the war.
Review/Assessment The assessment is the journal writing. Students will share and discuss information.
Reflections I found that this lesson had a great impact on my students. Beginning with the personal account was a good choice because it really got the students attention. It was graphic enough to elicit empathy, even from my 7th graders. In addition, using the Flash presentation kept the students engaged in the activity.
