Spring 2009

Note: this is only a basic guideline. Dates on this outline are subject to change.

Week 1 (Friday, January 16) Topics: Unit One: Understanding the Basic Sentence and fragments, vocabulary 1 handout for quiz.

Week 2 (Wednesday/Friday, January 21-23) Topics: Unit 6: understanding coordination and subordination, test over unit 1 and assignment #1 both due Wednesday (Discuss a work of art). Note: All writings are minimum of one full page. All assignments that you write in this class should be as long as indicated—not one paragraph. EACH week, incorporate what we learned from the previous week’s unit (coordinators, full sentences, transitional terms, etc.). Sign up for conferences the following week. Friday, vocabulary quiz 1, topic sentences and paragraphing discussion, pass out conference sheets

Week 3 (Wednesday/Friday, Jan. 28-30, No class, conferences) Conferences over assignments and writing on Wednesday—no class on Friday, conferences No vocab. quiz on conference weeks.

Week 4 (Wednesday/Friday, Feb. 4-6) Unit 2: making subjects and verbs agree, test over unit 2, assignment #2 both due Wednesday (discuss your experience with computers). Friday, vocabulary quiz 2, possible topic sentence quiz

Week 5 (Wednesday/Friday, Feb. 11-13) Topics: Unit 3r: using correct verb tenses, test over unit 3, assignment #3 both due Wednesday, (discuss a fictional character, not a cartoon character, his merits, characteristics, ex. Huck Finn ). Friday, vocabulary quiz 3, TBA discussion, sign up for conferences during following week.

Week 6 (Wednesday/Friday, Feb. 18-20) Conferences over assignments and writing on Wednesday and/or Friday—no class.

Week 7 (Wednesday/Friday, Feb. 25-27) Topics: Unit 4: using correct pronouns, test over unit 4, assignment #4 both due Wednesday (discuss either a job/hobby that you have had and what you’ve learned from it). Friday, vocabulary quiz 4, TBA.

Week 8 (Wednesday/Friday, March 4-6 ) Topics: Unit 10 using the right article, test over unit 5, assignment #5 both on Wednesday, (discuss something that happened recently on the news or something strange that has occurred in your life.) Friday, vocabulary quiz 5, TBA

Spring Break (Wednesday March 11, Friday March 13 th ) No class.

Week 9 (Wednesday/Friday March 18-20) Topics: Unit 7, using apostrophes correctly, test over unit 10, assignment #6 both on Wednesday (Discuss who had the biggest impact either positively or negatively on you growing up) Friday, vocabulary quiz 6, TBA Week 10 (Wednesday, March 25-27) Unit 8: using other punctuation and capitalizing, test over unit 7. Sign up for conferences for the following week. Sign up for conferences. Friday, vocabulary quiz 7, TBA

Week 11 (Wednesday/Friday April 1-3) Conferences on assignments and writing on Wednesday and/or Friday—no class.

Week 12 (Wednesday/Friday, April 8, no class Friday, holiday) No lecture. Test over unit 8. Assignment #7 is due Wednesday. (discuss what you think men and women look for in a mate—are they similar things?) Sign up for conferences for the following week. No vocab. Holiday

Week 13 (Wednesday/Friday April 15-17) 032 no longer meets for any classes AFTER Friday. 032 is excused for the semester unless needing additional conferences. Assignment #8 due Wednesday (Discuss if you could go back in time and be someone famous, who would you be and why?”) write 2-full pages. Friday, vocabulary quiz 8, TBA

Week 14 (Wednesday/Friday, April 22-24) 033 only—Wednesday paper assignment #8 due: (Discuss what would have been the best era of history to live in?) Friday, vocabulary quiz 9

Week 15 (Wednesday/Friday, April 29 th - May st 033 only—optional drop-in conferences

May 4-9—FINALS WEEK Have a great break!
