Communication Applications

Communication Applications Coach Andreya Hernandez [email protected] 817-252-2134 Room 143

Course Description: Communication Applications explores the theories and practice of speech communication behavior to promote communication competence in interpersonal, small group, and public speaking situations. Students will be required to take part in individual and group projects, and they will be expected to give presentations in front of the whole class.

Required Materials: Netbooks Paper Pen/Pencil

Projects/Assessments: Every six weeks, students will receive at least 3 major grades and 12 daily grades. Major grades will be quizzes, written tests, or presentations. Daily grades will be given for participation in group work, homework, having required materials, and completing assignments. Since it is a Speech class, students will be getting up and speaking in front of the class quite often. As a class, we will talk about any anxieties the students may have about this, and work together to try to get over these fears. If a student genuinely has a problem with this, please discuss it with the teacher before you are expected to present. Accommodations can be made for students in these situations.

Grading Policy: Any student who receives lower than a 75% on a major grade will be allowed to test or present once more for a chance at a higher grade. The highest grade a student can receive for a retest is a 75%. Late work will not be accepted. If there are extenuating circumstances, please discuss it with the teacher privately. If a student is absent, they will have one day to complete their missing assignments for every day missed.

Daily Grades: 40% Major Grades: 40% 6 weeks test: 20%

Class Rules: Students will be expected to abide by the “GO CHS” school rules. (Give and earn respect, On time and on task, Come prepared, Have fun engaging in learning, Show self-control.) In addition to this, students will be working collectively to make a Social Contract for their class. Since class time is limited, but also very important, students will not be allowed to leave class for any personal reasons. This includes, but is not limited to getting water, going to the restroom, or going to another class. If it is an emergency, such as feeling ill or getting hurt, the student will be allowed to go to the nurse.

Technology: Technology is a very important asset at our school, and will be used as much as possible in this class. Upon entering class, students will see a poster that shows whether or not they need their computers out that day. Netbooks should be brought to class everyday unless told otherwise. Cell phone and mp3 player use is prohibited unless told otherwise by the teacher. There will be times when students will be allowed to use smartphones for instructional purposes, but phones need to be put away and out of sight as soon as the activity is complete. If students are using their phones or listening to music in class, the device will be taken up by the teacher, and the student will have to pay $15 to get it back from the office at the end of the day.

Canvas: This year, the district will be using a program called Canvas. Through canvas, students will be able to turn in assignments, take quizzes, access notes, and participate in online discussions with their classmates. In the event of an absence, students are still responsible for any assignments or quizzes that were posted on Canvas. Students can also send messages directly to the teacher through Canvas if they have any questions.
