ANNOUNCING THE 15TH ANNUAL HTCC STUDENT RESEARCH CONFERENCE: SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 8:30-4:30 AT UC IRVINE

BASIC INFORMATION:

The 15th Annual HTCC Student Research Conference will be held at UC Irvine on Saturday, March 28, 2014 from 8:30 to 4:30. This conference offers a venue for community college students from across the state to present their original research-based work. The conference is open to IVC students who are in good standing, have a GPA of 2.0 or above, are enrolled in a minimum of 3 units in Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, and have done exemplary research. Topics in all academic disciplines are welcome, as are interdisciplinary projects. Although many conference topics arise out of research papers done for college courses, you do not have to write a full paper for the conference. You will apply to the conference with a 250-word research abstract (a summary of your project) and will deliver your presentation in oral or poster form. You are required to conduct your research and work on your presentation with a faculty mentor who has given his/her express approval to your project. Presenting at the conference will give you the opportunity to do the following:

 Share your ideas with other students in a professional setting  Improve your public speaking skills  Strengthen your personal statement and transfer application  Be eligible to compete for award and scholarship monies ranging from $50 to $1000  Be eligible to compete for a $500 UCI Research Fellowship if you intend to transfer to UCI  Be eligible to have your work published in the Building Bridges conference booklet

Presentation options at the conference include the following:

 Individual Oral Presentation or Performance: 12-minute oral presentation  Small Group Oral Presentation: 20-minute panel featuring two presenters  Large Group Oral Presentation: 40-minute panel featuring three or more participants  Individual or Group Poster Presentation: Research Poster Display  Performance: Student-created art, music, creative writing, drama, dance

The maximum number of presentations per student is one individual oral presentation AND one group presentation AND one individual or group poster display per student. Students may not do multiple presentations on the same topic.

NEED HELP?: INFORMATION SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS

The Honors Program Director and the IVC Student Research Team will be offering a series of information sessions and workshops designed to help you prepare for the conference. Interested students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to attend one or more workshops, which will explain conference procedures and expectations and offer assistance with topic development, library research, and abstract writing. Below is the workshop schedule; additional workshops and practice sessions will be offered following winter break to students admitted to the conference:

HOW TO APPLY TO THE CONFERENCE:

To submit your research abstract and apply for the conference, complete the steps below. Please note that the required HTCC Conference Application Form and additional resources including recommendations for writing your HTCC abstract are available under the “Research Conferences” link on the Honors Program website at http://academics.ivc.edu/honors.

What to do: 1) Work with your faculty mentor on defining and conducting your research project and on composing the following: a. A 250-word research abstract summarizing your project (this is your application to the conference) b. A one-sentence abstract summarizing your project (25 to 30 words, to be included in the conference program if you are accepted) c. A title for your presentation d. A list of FOUR authoritative sources consulted in your research, formatted in a documentation style appropriate to your discipline (MLA, APA, etc.) 2) Complete the HTCC Conference Application Form and submit the form via email to [email protected] by Friday, December 12 at 11:59 p.m. This form asks for contact information, for the required abstracts and sources, and for additional information related to the conference. Use subject heading “HTCC Application” when sending this email to Dr. Ryals. 3) Check your IVC email DAILY between the time you submit your application to Dr. Ryals and the time you receive confirmation that the abstract has been submitted to the HTCC. (You may not submit applications directly to HTCC.) Dr. Ryals will be submitting the abstracts to HTCC between Dec. 12 and Dec. 20 and may have questions for you or require abstract revisions during that period. If you do not reply to email questions during this time, Dr. Ryals may be unable to submit your application.

Dr. Ryals will notify you when your abstract has been submitted. The conference organizers will then contact you by late January to let you know whether your proposal has been accepted. You will have until conference time to work on your poster and/or presentation. Dr. Ryals and the IVC Student Research Team will begin to offer practice sessions beginning in February. You will also have the opportunity to submit a 400-word research abstract by March 1 to compete for conference awards. After the conference, you can submit an updated 250-word abstract to compete for inclusion in Building Bridges, the conference publication. Details about these opportunities will be communicated to you at the workshops and once you have applied to the conference.
