Parasha Meditation Tetzaveh בס”ד Parasha Meditation Tetzaveh Shemot 27:20-30:10 By Rebbetzin Chana Bracha Siegelbaum The Candles of Eternity Introduction: The Candles of Eternity Parashat Tetzaveh opens with the instruction for lighting the eternal candelabrum: וְאַתָּה תְּצַוֶּה אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָ אֵל וְיִקְחוּ אֵלֶי שֶׁמֶן זַיִת זָ כָּתִית לַמָּאוֹר לְהַעֲת נֵר תָּמִיד: (ספר שמות פרק כז:כ) “You shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure olive oil beaten for lighting, to 1 v’ata /”וְ אַ תָּ ה תְּ צַ וֶּ ה“ :raise up the candle to burn eternally.”0F Malbim explains the unusual language tetzaveh –“You shall command” to imply something which must be done quickly, immediately and for all generations to come. Even when the Temple was destroyed and the candles were abolished, מקדש מעט) behold we continue to light them in the synagogues which are called a small sanctuary 2 /mikdash me’at).1F Women’s Mitzvah נשים gematria) as the words/גמטריה) tetzaveh has the exact same numerical value/תְּ צַ וֶּ ה The word nashim tzivah –“He commanded the women.” Therefore, the Torah verse obligating the kindling /צוה of the eternal light in the sanctuary alludes to women’s responsibility to light the Shabbat candles in 3 the home.2F Although the mitzvah to light the Shabbat candles is from the Rabbis and not explicitly stated in the Torah, through this allusion the Torah empowers women with the ability of igniting the holiness of the Temple into our homes. The mitzvah of lighting the Shabbat candles pertains to 4 women more than to men.3F Even if the husband also wants to light Shabbat candles, the wife takes 5 precedence.4F The importance of the Shabbat candles is highlighted by the halachic fact that if one 6 cannot afford both shabbat candles and wine for Kidush, Shabbat candles take precedence.5F An Allusion to the Three Temples 7 “…that they bring you pure olive oil beaten for lighting.”6F The numerical value of the word .katit is 830. This equals the accumulative years of the two first temples/כָּ תִ ית beaten” in Hebrew“ The first temple stood for 410 years, the second temple for 420 years, together this adds up to 830. כָּ תִ ית Scripture thus alludes to the fact that the menorah will be lit in the temples which will stand for 1 Shemot 27:20. 2 Midrash Hagadol, Vayikra 6:3. 3 Ba’al HaTurim, Shemot 27:20. 4 Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 263:3. 5 Mishna Brura, Ibid. 6 Shulchan Aruch, Ibid. 7 Shemot 27:20. בס”ד 8 katit/כָּתִ ית לַמָּ אוֹר years. 7F Whereas the two first temples will light for a limited period as it states לְהַעֲת נֵר :l’meor – “beaten for lighting,” the third temple will remain forever, as the verse continues -l’ha’a lot ner tamid – “to raise up the candle to burn eternally” – Its light will never be extin/תָּ מִ יד 9 guished.8F Igniting Ourselves The glorious Temple built by King Solomon had special windows from which the light would emanate to the world as it states, “For the house he made windows wide without, and narrow 10 within.”9F Whereas, the windows of regular palaces are wide within and narrow without, in order to cause light to enter into them, the windows of the temple were opposite in order to bring forth a 11 great light inside out.10F G*d created everything including the light. Therefore, He does not need anyone to light for Him. Likewise, the Talmud learns from our Torah verse that we are obligated to light the candles for our own sake, rather than for G*d’s sake, as it states, “…that they bring elecha – ‘for you’ but not ‘for me,’ for I do not need/”אֵ לֶ י“ you pure olive oil…” Hashem commands 12 the light.”11F By lighting the candelabrum we ignite and illuminate ourselves with Hashem’s eternal light. The Candles of Shalom Bayit – Peace in the Home 13 The teaching from last week’s parasha: “Make for me a sanctuary and I will dwell within them”12F – meaning within each of us, is specifically fulfilled through the lighting of the menorah, by which we cause the Shechina to dwell in our midst. The Shabbat candles that a woman lights likewise cause the Shechina to enter into our homes. This explains the importance of the mitzvah of lighting the Shabbat candles which precedes even the lighting of the Chanukah candles for the sake of Shalom 14 Bayit – peace in the home.13F We can now understand why the Shabbat candles bring peace in the home even today when we have electric light and don’t need these candles for physical light. Lighting the Shabbat candles causes the Divine indwelling Presence to dwell in the home between – isha/ ִא י שָ ה heh of the/ה ish – man and the/אִ יש yud of the/י husband and wife, by igniting the woman. These two letters comprise one of Hashem’s holy names through which peace in the home shines forth. Eternal Witness leha’a lot – to raise up is missing a vav to hint to the fact that the vav (6) candles are/לְהַעֲת The word 15 extinguished and rekindled, while only the middle candle lights perpetually.14F This is also why it states, “to raise up the candle” in singular rather than “candles” in plural. Hashem intended that within each part of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) there would be a testimony that His Divine presence dwells among Israel. In the Holy of Holies the Ark gave faithful testimony that the Divine presence rested there. The Tablets contained within it could be read from both sides, with the mem and 8 Ibid. 9 Toldot Yitzchak, Shemot 27:20. 10 I Kings 6:4. 11 Vayikra Rabah 31:7. 12 Ba’al HaTurim quoting Babylonian Talmud, Menachot 86b. "ויקחו אליך שמן זית זך" אמר רבי שמואל בר נחמני אליך ולא לי לא לאורה אני צריך (תלמוד בבלי מסכת מנחות דף פו/ב) 13 Shemot 25:8. 14 Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 263:3. 15 Ba’al Haturim, Shemot 27:20. בס”ד samech miraculously not falling out. In the Tent of Meeting Hashem’s light shone from the eternal 16 middle candle. Everyone would look at it, and see the name of Hashem, dwelling within them.15F This candle is similar to the Ark, since they both witness G-d’s presence. Two witnesses are 17 required as it states “according to the testimony of two…”16F Spiritual Recharge The candle, which symbolizes the words of Torah, is considered a guide to life, safeguarding us from stumbling. Whoever performs a mitzvah sustains his soul, and is considered as if he lit a candle ner Hashem nishmat adam – A candle of G-d is the soul of/נֵר הַ שֵ ם נִשְׁ מַ ת אָדָ ם :before G-d as it states 18 19 man.17F The benefit of the candle is that it purifies the soul. 18F Candles differ from other goods in this world, which becomes reduced when shared with others. From one candle you can kindle thousands of candles without diminishing the light of the original candle. In the same way, when we fulfill a mitzvah even if it seemingly comprises expense and effort, we do not get depleted but rather recharged with renewed spiritual energy. Meditation: Sit comfortable in your chair and close your eyes. 1. Take several deep breaths and imagine you are an unlit candle. Get in touch with the yearning to become lit. 2. Allow your mind travel back to search for mitzvot (Torah commandments) you performed. It could be visiting the sick, dancing vigorously at a wedding, rejoicing with the bride, keeping the dietary laws scrupulously, giving tzedaka (charity) etc. 3. Focus in on one of the mitzvoth that you especially performed with your entire heart. 4. Visualize how this mitzvah acts like a spark that ignites your wick, and imagine how you begin to glow with a bright orange light. Your flame grows stronger and your whole body becomes enlightened. Feel yourself radiating this warm light, as you slowly inhale and exhale. – tamid/תָּ מִ יד ner – candle, exhale as you visualize the word/נֵר Inhale as you visualize the word .5 eternal. G-d’s candle burns perpetually within your soul. Keep repeating the breathing, tamid on the outbreath for eight/תָּ מִ יד ner on the in-breath, and the word/נֵר visualizing the word 20 times.19F 6. Your light is like the brightness of wisdom driving away the darkness of ignorance. You are the bright radiant light. Feel yourself pulsating, expanding, your light shining forth further and further until it illuminates your entire house. Allow your inner flame to reach out even further until it fills your whole neighborhood. Your neighborhood is illuminated by your glowing light. 16 Kli Yakar, ibid. 17 Devarim 17:6, Babylonian Talmud, Sota 31:2. 18 Mishlei 20:27. 19 Shemot Rabah 36:3. 20 Number eight symbolizes eternity, see Maharal, Ner Mitzvah, p. 23. בס”ד Imagine your candle traveling even further out to your entire country and still further to encompass the whole universe. 7. You fill the entire world with your light, illuminating every space to break through any darkness and blockage within yourself and the world. Continue glowing with this orange light in all directions, eradicating darkness from within and without. Notes: Why is the commandment to light the menorah placed before all the vessels of the Mishkan? The kindling of the candelabrum is the only Temple service described in the book of Shemot.

Each section is called an Aliya [literally: Go up] since for each Aliya, one person "goes up" to make a bracha [blessing] on the Torah Reading. The following Aliya summary will list the numerous laws detailed in Parshas Mishpatim. A total of 53 Mitzvot are commanded. 1st Aliya: The Parsha opens with the commandment to use pure olive oil in lighting the Menorah. Aharon and his four sons were selected to be the Kohanim. The basic garments of a Kohain consisted of a turban, shirt, pants, and belt. The Kohain Gadol wore four additional garments: the Me'ill - a long outer robe; the Ayphod - a quilted vest or bibbed apron; the Choshen - jeweled breastplate; and the Tzitz - engraved, golden, forehead plate. The quilted vest is described in this Aliya along with the two Shoham stones. These were engraved with the names of the 12 Tribes and set on the shoulders of the Kohain Gadol. 2nd Aliya: The cloth settings for the Shoham stones are described along with the jeweled breastplate. The method of fastening the breastplate to the quilted vest is explained. The breastplate was a quilted garment set with 12 stones, each engraved with the name of a Tribe. 3rd Aliya: The long outer robe is described. The hem of this garment was edged with small bells intended to announce the presence of the Kohain Gadol as he walked through the Bais Hamikdash.

Weekly Message of Torah from Rabbi Rheins Parashat Tetzaveh Keeping The Light Shining Against The Onslaught of Anti-Semitism This week’s Torah portion, Tetzaveh, includes the instruction for maintaining the Ner Tamid, the menorah that would shine a continuous light to brighten the inner sanctum of the tabernacle. We were commanded to kindle the lights every single day and that this mitzvah was an eternal obligation for every generation. To this day, every synagogue has a Ner Tamid that glows above the Araon Kodesh, the Ark that contains the Torah scrolls. The reasons for this light are both practical and symbolic. Yes, there is a logical function to having a light that illumines our sanctuaries. And it is also true that the Ner Tamid represents the inextinguishable spirit of the Jewish people: our commitment to be a light unto the nations and to resist those who are bent on evil. In an ancient midrash, Rabbi Berechiah taught that though the Ner Tamid is a commandment from God, the light is for our benefit alone: “‘And the earth was chaos and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep’ (Genesis 1:2). What follows? ‘And God said, let there be light!’ The Holy One said, ‘I have even created light in the midst of darkness. Do I need your light?’” (Vayikra Rabba 31.7) We need the light. And we need to keep kindling the light because in every generation there are those who are determined to sow chaos. This past Sunday, Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) tweeted vicious comments against Jews.

  • Vayakhel 5774 the Mishkan and the Wide World Beyond Rabbi David Wolkenfeld
Vayakhel 5774 The Mishkan and the Wide World Beyond Rabbi David Wolkenfeld “The first six days after Shabbat are always the hardest.” I saw that quote and it strikes me as speaking to a question which is actually quite profound. What is the relationship between Shabbat and the work that we do during the other six days of the week? How should we feel when Shabbat ends and we are faced with the prospect of six days until it will once again be Shabbat? Professor Nechama Leibowitz was one of the most influential and insightful teachers of parshanut in the 20th century. From a modest apartment in Jerusalem, she mailed mimeographed parsha sheets all over the world, guiding her students to a greater appreciation of the Torah and of parshanut, the timeless endeavor to understand the meaning of significance of the Torah. It was Nechama Leibowitz who emphasized and highlighted and found new linguistic evidence for the conceptual link between the creation of the mishkan, the tabernacle - the subject of this week’s Torah portion - and the Torah’s description of the creation of the world. Key phrases like, “made”, “saw”, “complete,” “work” appear in the Torah’s narrative of creation, and then again, in the Torah’s description of the creation of this mishkan. The language is the same, but the scale is different. God created the universe for humanity to live and flourish. We created a mishkan to bring God’s presence into our midst. The words are the same, but the scale is different. There is another way in which the scale is different.

Parashat HaShavuah r;hB Vayikra (Leviticus) Understanding the Parsha 25:1-26:2 B’har Leviticus 25:1-26:2 (On Mount (Sinai) We will Learn how to 1) interpret the main theme (subject)of a Parsha (weekly reading from the Torah), 2) make thematic connections to that Parsha (study the Scriptures related by a common theme [subject], line upon line and precept upon precept) 3) learn how to gain greater understanding of the Parsha we are looking at through its thematic connections to other portions of Scripture. Chiastic Structures Within the Torah Back in Parashat Mishpatim, we saw an example of achiastic structure in the Torah. A chiastic structure is a thematic method of organizing the stories of the Torah. Some believe, the Scriptures are a hodge-podge of stories hooked together in a book; but, they couldn’t be further from the truth. The Scriptures (and the Torah in particular) are a VERY organized and structured document. In fact, they are so well organized, once you understand how to uncover their organizational principles you will definitely fall on your knees and give glory to Adonai, knowing that only an all-knowing, all-powerful Elohim (God) could have developed such highly structured approach. In this lesson, we will uncover another chiastic structure woven through the stories found in the books of Exodus and Leviticus. Thematic analysis is THE primary method and model we should be using to understand and interpret the Scriptures. Adonai intended for us to study the Scripturesthematically. This will become even more evident to you becausethe themes will naturally lead you to profound truths and patterns found in the Torah that would otherwise remain hidden! http://www.restorationoftorah.org http://restorationoftorah.org/WeeklyParsha/MBMBehar.htm 1 The "Problems" With the Sidra Read Leviticus 25:1.What seems "strange" about this verse? • Tetzaveh - Rabbi Lerner - February 6 ,2011
Tetzaveh - Rabbi Lerner - February 6 ,2011 27:20-21: Ve'atah Tetzaveh - you should command Bnei Yisrael to take pure olive oil, pressed for lighting, to light the Menorah continually. In the Ohel outside the Paroches near the Luchos, Aharon and his sons should arrange it from evening to morning before Hashem; it is an eternal Chok for their generations from Bnei Yisrael. There are obvious questions to be asked here: Why is this topic even found here in the middle of the description of the building of the mishkan? Furthermore, it is totally unnecessary at any rate, as it appears later in Emor 24:1-3 - with very similar wording; the gist is similar to what we have here; the only difference is that the formulation in Emor is the typical one beginning with Veyedaber Hashem el Moshe, as opposed to our parsha. Abarbanel: The Torah should say Tzav and not Ve'Atah Tetzaveh? And furthermore, as asked above, this whole topic is said in Emor, except for the fact that there is no preceding Veyadaber - Hashem just jumps right into it here with no introduction? Furthermore, there in Emir it is the right place for it; here we are discussing Binyan Hamishkan, not the day-to-day operation of the mishkan? It doesn't belong here - it is totally out of place. Rabbeinu Bachya: the Torah says that the oil should be pressed, Kasis Lama'or, as opposed to oil dripping out naturally - you must take some action for this oil. Also, it cannot be from grinding and pounding the olives - it must be pressed; otherwise, there will particles of the olive - the oil must be pure, with none of the skin or other parts.

  • The Ner Tamid – What Is This Light? Tetzaveh and You Shall Command
The Ner Tamid – What is this light? Tetzaveh And you shall command the Israelites and they shall bring to you oil of beaten olives for lighting, for raising up the eternal light (Exodus 27:20) 1) The first act of service which our forefathers were commanded to perform in the Mishkan, was to light the eternal lamp, the ner tamid. This is analogous to the creation of the world, the beginning of which is “And YHVH said, Let there be light! And there was light” (Bereishit 1:3, according to Y. Leibowitz, Seven Years of Discussion on the Weekly Parasha). The ner tamid corresponds to the first light. that light whose source is infinite and whose power is thousandfold greater than the power of our sun. the light which was hidden away to serve the righteous in the future to come: “And God called the light Day” – Are not light and day synonymous?! Learn as follows: The light which was created during the six days of Creation – to shine at day would serve no purpose, because of the great brightness of the sun; it cannot shine at night, because it was created only for day. Where is this light? It was hidden and set aside for the tzaddikim in the world to come, as is written (Isaiah 30:26): “And the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold brighter than the light of the seven days.” (Ber. Rabbah 3:6) A bit of this light, which was hidden away for the tzadikkim in the world to come, flickered constantly in the sanctuary.

Rabbi Allan Berkowitz Cong. Beth David Approachable Torah 5781/2021 Torah Cornucopia: Parashat Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20-30:10) and Purim Overview of the Parashah • Command to establish the eternal or perpetual light in the Tabernacle • 43(!) verses centered on the ritual garb of the Kohanim. 39 of those are details of the High Priest’s clothing and 4 verses on those of the ordinary priests. • Installation of the Kohanim 1. An Oddity: Where’s Moses? Exodus 27:20 And you will command the Children of Israel that they take you pure olive oil beaten for the light, to light the lamp always A) Gaon of Vilna (18th c. Lithuania) Why doesn’t the Torah state, “And God spoke to Moses…” rather than “And you will command…”? And why is Moses not named a single time in this entire parashah? A possible answer is that in most years the 7th of Adar, the yahrtzeit of Moses, occurs in the week of this parashah. God knew in advance that Moses would die on the 7th of Adar and that is why his name is not mentioned in this parashah. (Note: so as to prevent a personality cult from forming). B) Nahal Kedumim (R. Hayyim Yosef David Azulai 18th C. Kabbalist, Israel) The reason is that Moses said to God (in Ex. 32:32), “Wipe me out of Your book” and the curse of a righteous person is fulfilled even if it is made conditionally. This is hinted at in the verse, “And you will command the Children of Israel that they take you…” The Jewish People will take you as an example, that even if a person has good intentions, he should not allow a curse to escape his lips.” C) Exodus 32:32 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have been guilty of a great sin.

  • Torah Portion Tetzaveh Exodus 27:20-30:10 This Shabbat's Torah
Torah Portion Tetzaveh Exodus 27:20-30:10 This Shabbat’s Torah portion is called Tetzaveh (which means you shall command) from Exodus 27:20-30:10, and continues the description of how the Israelites were commanded to construct the tabernacle, which we started to hear about in last week’s portion. We are commanded to create a ner tamid, “a constantly burning light,” above the sanctuary ark and to appoint Aaron and his sons as priests to manage the sacrifices offered in the sanctuary. Every Jewish congregation has a ner tamid in their sanctuary that continuously burns. This reminds us of God’s everlasting presence. We also have detailed descriptions of the clothing that Aaron, as High Priest, was to wear: 1. An ephod which is an apron of gold, blue, purple and scarlet yarns, and fine linen, with a belt around the middle and two shoulder straps, each containing a lazuli stone inscribed with six names of the 12 sons of Jacob, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. 2. The breastpiece of judgement, which was a square-shaped container decorated on the front with four rows of precious stones, each framed and mounted in gold, and each bearing a name of the 12 sons of Jacob. This is attached to the ephod with gold chains 3. The Urim and Thummim, which was a small box through which it was believed God spoke; and was worn by the priest inside the breastplate of judgement. 4. A blue robe embroidered with a hem of pomegranates of blue, purple, and crimson yarns with bells of gold 5.
