Description of what funding is required for: the funding is required to employ three part time seasonal workers. It will also be used for heating, cleaning and keeping the building wind and watertight and in good repair.
At least five exhibitions a year will be held and where visitors can learn about the Lockerbie Air Disaster and local history. Staff will provide tourist information and advice on local facilities available. The facility is open seven days a week in the summer months and over 8,000 people have visited annually in the last few years.

Description of what funding is required for: To hire the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to bring a touring show to Dumfries in June 2014. This is normally the only Scottish venue in the European tour with a typical audience of between 900 and 1,200 people, including approximately 300 school pupils. The project is a partnership with the Crichton Development Company and Easterbrook Hall and it is supported by Glasgow University and the Crichton Library. In 2014 the Group hope to develop work with the Holywood Trust and the University of the West of Scotland to increase schools attendance at the performances.
Through monitoring of attendance figures 10% of the population came from the Annandale & Eskdale area and this reflects in the sum that has been requested.

Langholm Playcare Ltd provides full day child care for children from birth to 16 and delivers funded pre-school education in line with Curriculum for Excellence. The recent Care Inspectorate report rated the care as “very good” with “a caring and motivated staff workforce who work together well and in partnership with parents and children”. This service benefits around 100 children and their families.

Description of what funding is required for: To continue the Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) project into its fifth and final year. Over 150 stands of Japanese knotweed and all known giant hogweed plants have been treated since the project started. Balsam has been removed from new sites. The funding requested by this application will allow the River Annan Trust to continue to employ a Project Officer. It will also allow the trust to make other staff members available for control and awareness training, essential to the project’s success. The funding will also enable two volunteers from Apex Scotland to receive training in the safe use of pesticides at the Barony College.

Description of what funding is required for: Music in Hospitals provides live musical performances throughout Scotland for people of all ages, with a range of conditions relating to illness or disability, who can no longer attend such events in their community. The proposed project is to provide concerts at a significantly reduced price to care units in Dumfries and Galloway where funds for “quality of life” services are scarce and where possible encourage care units to make a contribution towards the cost of their concert. The professional musicians are selected at audition, not only for their high standard of musicianship but for their ability to communicate easily and sensitively and will travel from various areas in Scotland to bring live music directly to dayrooms or by bedsides of frail and vulnerable people.

Description of what funding is required for: Contribution to travel expenses towards 3 orchestral concerts in Dumfries and Galloway, one of which will take place in Moffat. The orchestra is made up of players from all corners of the region and beyond. This includes young players of a sufficient standard who are invited to join for rehearsals and occasionally to play at concerts under the mentoring of professional music teachers who are employed by D&G Education Service. Costs of financing rehearsals and concerts are substantial including players’ travel expenses, in particular for those you live furthest from the rehearsal venue. The orchestra would cease to exist if it was unable to attract quality players who are prepared to travel to rehearsal and concert venues at an annual average cost per person of £85.
There is a current membership of 60 with a total of 270 adult and young people having played since the set up in 1997 and audiences at the main concerts can reach on average 300. Description of what funding is required for: The funding will pay for 12 volunteers from each area in the region to participate in and complete Expedition specific first aid course (has to be updated every 3 years) which is a requirement for volunteers who are accompanying young people on expeditions as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The funding will also cover costs for personal accident, public liability and equipment insurance for 60 volunteers from Dumfries & Galloway (29% are Annandale and Eskdale based). The funding will allow the use of supervisors to support the increase in participant numbers. This will also include accommodation on a training weekend at an outdoor centre for 52 people and 8 leaders.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award has been running since 1956 and offers young people the opportunity to undertake a personal development programme.

The service provide hire of vehicles (self drive or with volunteer driver) for community groups and individuals, and driver training. The funding would cover insurance, maintenance and repair of the vehicle fleet, rent of an office base for 4 salaried members of staff (1 full and 3 part time) who supervise and support a team of 35 volunteer drivers, organise driver training for group and individual registered drivers, support the Management Board of Volunteer Directors, take bookings from ATI members and the public and deal with day to day financial matters and ensure compliance with health and safety and company legislation. Over the year the service will provide over 25,000 passenger journeys, at least 2,600 for people with disabilities throughout Annandale and there are currently 152 groups and 11 individual members of the Initiative.
