B.S. Industrial Engineering with Honors and Highest Distinction, May 2003 Technical Focus Area: Information Systems Design Honors Thesis: Guiding Appropriate Reliance on Automation using Sonification GPA: 4.00/4.00

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE University of Wisconsin – Madison HealthSystems Laboratory 2003 - Present Advisor: Dr. Patricia Flatley Brennan

Modeling Participation in the National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII)  Generated an approved grant proposal with senior faculty members to design modeling tools aimed at helping regional health information organizations make more informed decisions. Co-developed the problem context and approach, designed a data collection instrument, critiqued a preliminary set of models, developed an alternative modeling approach based on these critiques. Simulating Health Information Exchange Failures  Developed a discrete event simulation of failures in health education information sent from community providers to patients verbally, electronically and in written form. Examined the consequences of various policy changes that altered the mix of these formats, in terms of patients’ ability to receive the provided information. National Multi-Protocol Ensemble for Self-Scaling Systems for Health (NMESH)  Co-wrote human subjects application, aided in structuring an evaluation framework for the project, developed survey instruments, interviewed clinical staff, health care executives and Marquard, 2

technical development staff. Synthesized qualitative observational and interview data gleaned during the evaluation. Wisconsin Health Information Exchange (WHIE)  Examined the financial challenges confronting emerging regional health information organizations (RHIOs), produced a set of guidelines for approaching these financing decisions.

Implementation of Clinical Documentation  Evaluated the impact of electronic clinical documentation on inpatient nursing and unit staff, shadowed nurses and staff using a structured observation tool Health@Home  Composed and conducted a secondary analysis of photographs and layouts obtained during project site visits.

University of Iowa Cognitive Systems Laboratory – Iowa City, IA 2002 – 2003 Advisor: Dr. John D. Lee  Co-developed a simulation model of driver behavior.  Designed and conducted secondary data analysis for the use of sonification to calibrate appropriate trust in automation, aided in the experimental design for a follow-up study.
