MUEN 1134 Guitar Ensemble

Catalog Description:

MUEN 1134 This course is designed for the student who has previous guitar experience. This course is an ensemble setting where students will have the opportunity to read and perform various styles of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Topics discussed will include pedagogical technique as well as reading music notation for beginning to intermediate levels. Admission is by the consent of the Director. May be repeated four times for credit.

Pre-requisites:

Introduction and Purpose

This course is designed to instruct students on playing guitar in a group setting. Students will learn to develop proper technique, note reading, use of dynamics, etc. This course may be required for music majors and transfers to senior institutions.

Instructional Materials All instructional materials will provided by the instructor. Objectives At the completion of this course the students should be able to:

1. Play on a level beyond where they began the semester. 2. Use proper techniques for their particular performing medium. 3. Play music at a level appropriate for their performance skills. 4. Perform in a recital/public performance.

Methods of Instruction

Teaching is done in a group setting with some lecture and discussion, but primarily with the playing of music and the instructor’s evaluation, criticism, and positive reinforcement. The instructor’s demonstration of techniques is also used.

Methods of Evaluation

1. Students are evaluated weekly on their progress in their particular performing medium. 2. Playing tests or performances are given throughout the semester. 3. The guitar ensemble will perform in one recital per semester.

Letter grades for the course will be based on the following percentages:

90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60% F

I. Guitar Ensemble

II. Discussion and development of proper playing techniques

III. Development of correct sitting position

IV. Development of correct hand position

V. Instruction in various technical skills such as playing scales, warm-up procedures, arpeggios, slurring, tremolo, etc.

VI. Ensemble material will be assigned according to their playing ability.

VII. Performance of a final recital.
