I came out pretty early in age, always had crushes on girls from a pretty obvious age, and looking back on it there were girls in my life I probably wanted to have sit on my face before I consciously thought about them . sitting on my face. I admired them from afar mostly, never really making an effort to confront my attraction or feelings. I dated males for most of my adolescence, and by adolescence I mean early adult years. All the years I thought Valentine’s Day felt special by spending it with someone I loved, being intimate with them and thinking that, that was as great as it was gonna get, left me to [quickly] finding all of that to be lie once I spent my first Valentine's Day with a woman. I have to say, most of the time when two females are in a relationship the emotions can get overwhelming. I didn’t really know what to expect during Valentine’s Day when I was dating my first serious girlfriend, and she told me she had set up a ‘surprise date’ for us. We went out for dinner and drinks and walked around the beach. It was nice and simple, and yet I still felt more in the moment of being with her than I had during any of my dates with men in the past. When we arrived back at her place, I was told to wait outside for a moment. She came out a couple minutes later, holding a blindfold in her hand, and ordered me to keep my eyes closed with it. As she took my hand, I felt nervous and questionably turned on (I think it was a mix behind the intense adrenaline of the fact that I couldn’t see shit, and also knowing she was taking such charge). We walked up the stairs and through the door of her apartment. She removed the blindfold from my face and stood to the side. I opened my eyes to be met with the light of fire from multiple candles lining the walls - straight down the hallway and into her bedroom… at this point, I didn’t really care what was in the room as long as it was her, and she was naked. Upon entering the room, I saw there were rose petals spread all over a big white comforter and a bottle of wine with chocolate covered strawberries, and more candles, with soft music playing (you’d think it was out of a cheesy love movie and, to be honest, it could have been). Everything felt pretty surreal in that moment, and I think for the first time I understood why people really used Valentine’s Day as a way to celebrate love on higher grounds. I turned to her to kiss her, pulling her body into mine. And I swear on everything, if the feeling of heaven on earth is real it was the moment her body pressed into mine. She pushed me back on her bed, took her shirt off, and before I knew it was straddling my waist. Somehow she managed to remember to bring the blindfold into the bedroom (we both know this was no accident) and she tied it around my eyes once again. She began to kiss every inch of my body. I felt her lips against my ear, down my neck and over to my chest. My shirt started to rise up, and I felt her beginning to shift her body down onto mine, kissing my stomach, my waist, and slowly tracing the same space with her fingers across my skin. I thought holding your breath underwater for a long time was rough, but anticipating the wait of feeling your naked girlfriend on top of you with your eyes closed makes it pretty hard to breathe, believe it or not. The thing about this Valentine's Day that felt so different, aside from it being my first Valentine's Day with a woman, wasn’t so much that it was my first “lesbian” Valentine’s Day. It was more or less the intense passion, and connections behind it that made me realize how much more special loving the same sex could be for me, instead of settling for what ‘felt’ like a special love. - S.
