“SPEAK OUT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION” CAMPAIGN & “INTERCULTURAL CITIES” PROGRAMME

INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE AND FIGHT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION

CROSSED MEDIA REPORTS: EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVES ON APULIA

VENUE & DATES Bari – Apulia – Italy 9 – 11 December 2009

BACKGROUND Today in Europe, discrimination is a crime. And yet various European and national reports show that discrimination continues to be commonplace and that the victims, or potential victims, are relatively uninformed about their rights and the possible remedies available at national and European level. Accordingly, the Speak out against discrimination campaign in conjunction with the Intercultural Cities programme – a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Commission - seeks to promote the production and dissemination of a quality and professional information. On the basis of media partnerships, this information will have to highlight two specific points:,

1 the general prohibition of discrimination (“Discrimination is a crime”); information targeting public opinion in general, to be developed in conjunction with the media (mainstream and ethnic & diversity media) and their professionals,

2 the mechanisms for protecting and defending the rights of victims of discrimination: this information is intended for victims or potential victims and is to be developed in conjunction with the ethnic & diversity media and their professionals.

OBJECTIVES To encourage, by organising a European media workshop in Italy, the formation of local, national or European pairings of media professionals with a view to the co-production and co-distribution of high-quality and professional written or audiovisual reports on intercultural reality and the fight against discrimination at European, national and local level.

To raise awareness among media professionals, via their own co-production and co- distribution ventures, of possible innovatory practices in the coverage of intercultural reality and the fight against discrimination at European, national and local level.

To contribute to strengthen local, national and European networks of media professionals for high-quality and professional media coverage of intercultural reality and the kinds of action taken to combat discrimination in Europe. CONTENT Organisation of a European exchange meeting on professional and journalistic practices.

Production and publication/broadcasting of reports offering different perspectives on intercultural dialogue and the fight against discrimination.

Participants will therefore be asked to produce, in groups of 2 or 3, media report(s) offering different perspectives on the above-mentioned topics. The way the subjects dealt with are treated in these reports must reflect their local, national and European dimensions. Based on practical production activity, the workshop should give media professionals a better understanding of intercultural dialogue and fight against discrimination. These media reports will then be published or broadcast through several supports (orangelog.eu, websites of the CoE antidiscrimination campaign and intercultural cities programme) or media participants will have to choose to disseminate and broadcast their own work. As well as permitting comparison of professional practices, the purpose of this workshop is to enable public opinion to see and hear a different way of expressing the diversity that exists in modern European societies.

The programme will include a session in the programme of the Forum of Intercultural Cities at which the reports, the observations and the conclusions made by the media participants on Bari’s intercultural dynamics will be presented, in order to give other official representatives involved in the Forum a better understanding of intercultural and antidiscrimination issues given through perspectives of media professionals.
