Purpose Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) job descriptions are a management tool to help organize duties and provide employees with the employer’s expectations with regard to a specific job classification. Job Summary This is the daily operations caregiver position for KIC’s, Little Village Learning Center (LVLC). This position will ensure a safe and secure environment for the children in our care. Follow and ensure compliance with the LVLC policies and procedures manual and the policies and procedures of the State of Alaska.

This position is responsible for assisting the implementation of the pre-school curriculum. The position provides a variety of structured educational material to parents of LVLC eligible pre-school aged children. Responsibilities of this position include assisting the development and implementation of learning tasks directed at teaching developmental skills to improve school readiness; foster positive parenting skills, especially for parents of children under age 5; improve parent and child interaction; promote and support a healthy family environment that discourages alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use; measurement of children’s progress through various means. Be a positive role model to other staff, children, and families.

PROVIDES SAFE ENVIRONMENT BY  Maintaining orderly, clean, and appealing facilities;  Removing known safety hazards.

ENCOURAGES CHILDREN’S PARTICIPATION BY  Providing interactive activities.

INFORMS STAFF AND PARENTS OF CURRICULUM BY  Evaluating students progress through observation and pre/post assessments;  Maintain progress files on students;  Analyzing data to determine student progress and program effectiveness;  Encouraging and supporting parents to participate in programs and parent meetings to encourage healthy environments for families.

develop culturally appropriate family/parent activities, workshops, and training.  Coordinating group activities and field trips to enhance learning experiences.  Assist with the Education Director to develop a quarterly newsletter.

ENCOURAGES CONSISTENCY OF SERVICE BY  Maintaining communications with parents and staff.  Assist in the implementing curriculum for children to increase kindergarten readiness skills in communications, academic, motor development, social interaction, while nurturing culture enrichment.

CONTRIBUTES TO TEAM EFFORT BY  Accomplishing related results as needed;  Offering information and opinions as a member of the daycare team;  Perform other related duties as directed by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  Ability to communicate with and relate to parents and their children.  Encourage parental involvement through the cultural setting.  Ability to work with preschool-aged students.  Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions.  Ability to lead students through hands-on activities.  Ability to develop and implement early childhood curriculum.  Computer skills: Microsoft Word and Office Outlook; Excel.

Physical Activities Include Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, and stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lifting and carrying items and boxes up to forty (40) pounds.

Writing by hand and using a personal computer.

Physical Requirements:  Able to be outdoors for up to 1 1/2 hours per day in order to supervise playground or field trips.  Able to see and hear clearly for up to 100 yards for safe supervision of children.  Able to get up from a sitting position on the floor without difficulty.  Able to bend at the knees and lift a child weighing up to 40 pounds.  Able to handle stressful situations consistently on a daily basis.  Able to play running games and stay involved in the children’s activities.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT The environment involves the usual risks and stress of an office environment. The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled employees and/or family members.

EDUCATION High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Child Development Associate-CDA is preferred; Valid Alaska Driver’s License with good driving record; Maintain the required 10 hours of training yearly as state regulation state; Submit 3 letters of reference, two of whom, are unrelated to the person; Have current and maintain First Aid/CPR certification, or able to obtain upon hire; Current TB-Tine test documentation; Submit copy of criminal background check, a release of information, and 2 sets of finger prints (required by state law). Must have no prior criminal record.

EXPERIENCE Prefer six (6) months of experience in a childcare setting.
